TL;DR Make LAVs to be RWD, apply hand brake (R1) to front wheels and tighten LAVs turn radius... To drift more easily and make drift donuts possible for tactical purposes (and fun )...
Mainly for drift and "drift donuts" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ifIDcQUtI_4) and what comes with it in a "tacticall" sense.
Drift? What for? Drift is essential for taking tight turns at high speed in DUST. Ability to make donuts would allow LAV drivers to score more run-overs while approaching a tight group of reds. And more. More on "more" later.
We have FWD already. You can actually drift "a little" now by holding R1 while taking tight turn, but since our LAVs are FWD with low torque there is no possibility to make "donuts"
AWD would be useful for climbing steep terrain ...and in ice/snow (https://forums.dust514.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=89899&find=unread)
More on tactical side of making drift donuts. For starters it is something that has to be learnt and depends heavily on human player skills and less on DUSTS's skill system. Skills would be needed only for using certain modules allowing to switch drive type and tracking module for turrets.
The driver, by making tight turns in place with LAV, allows the turret operator to "stay in place" and simultaneously be ready to instantaneously run away. Another new module for tracking upgrades would be necessary though. Something to allow "lock" the turret on a particular target and maintain this lock independently to LAV's moving direction. Turret operator could do this less accurately without tracking module by keeping turret aligned in fixed position with LAV and using LAV's spin for horizontal turret movement. Additionally donut-spinning LAV could hit all reds standing within it's spin radius.
If no to a new LAV module then make LAVs to be RWD, apply hand brake (R1) to front wheels and lower LAV's min turn radius...

I thought the LAV were all AWD anyway? If anything they need stabilisation as they roll way too easy |

A sign of LAV being a FWD vehicle... |

FYI, on snowy maps you CAN do donuts. Forward and reverse. Just turn the wheels to the max to one side of your LAV, hold the hand break and accelerate quickly. To the front or back. Voila, donuts!
Did this while driving unmodified Onikuna.
Dont work on dry dirt roads. Nor on sand (?!) But you can drift |
