A player run council sounds really great, but there is a limiting factor of human bias and that not all ideas will be given the priority they should get. Also the CPM is viewed really negatively in the community for some reason. Every post they make typically gets flamed to no end.
Instead, what if the center of development were the ideas themselves? The idea is to have a Cloud of ideas. Users type in ideas just like they would type them into a thread, but with a lower max letter count. The idea is then launched into a digital cloud and is anonymous. Users surfing the cloud can look at ideas and then give them a Upvote/Downvote/Report or Indifferent and then tag the idea for what category it belongs to. Ideas which are upvoted then come into priority and once they obtain enough momentum a special thread opens for them for people to add new ideas to it, then those ideas can be upvoted or downvoted.
Once an idea gains enough momentum, it is then submitted for CCP, they can see how many votes have been given on an issue and on the sub ideas about that issue, they can also see how many downvotes were given and how polarizing and contentious the idea is, then they can place it on a roadmap we can see and click on that will also show us the ideas that are grouped together and upvoted based on the tags. I.E. if "Raven Dropsuit" was tagged and upvoted enough, all the ideas involving the raven dropsuit or some new dropsuit are grouped together and submitted to CCP.
The anonymous nature of the idea can also let CCP crowdsource their own ideas, they could have placed this Commando suit on there and seen if anyone likes it, or if they like it more then how much people want aiming fixed or the slot layouts on the Caldari Logi suit fixed. This can help CCP straighten their priorities.
Also this can be included in game, a terminal can be added into the merc quarters where users can view the idea cloud and upvote using button combinations, like holding L2 would access the voting section of a idea or R2 would access the reporting section of the idea. So say L2+Triangle upvotes the idea, L2+X downvotes the idea, R2+X reports the user for abuse to be flagged and banned, R2+Square reports the post for trying to sell stuff or gibberish etc. etc. Also there could be a button where you are tired of seeing post about an issue, like when 8,000 ideas are submitted about the "Give us the ISK back!!!"
Users who are downvoted or/and especially reported can be banned or have their ideas require more upvotes to gain momentum.
If there is an issue to with to many ideas, we can put a limiter on it, like you must earn 1,000 WP per idea submitted and the WP earned towards cloud posting expires after a certain time. |

Also there can be a feedback button on the controller and the cloud, ideas can be marked "Gibberish" or "Difficult to read" etc. etc. And that feedback can be sent anonymously to the user who submitted the idea so they know their idea needs work.
I.E. if I post. "Duvolle Overpowered, Nerf Plz". There can be a selection for "Not Enough Information"
or
I.E. if I post "Duvolle shoots a X+X-Y and has range of X/Y+P/3YXtp and needs X+3dfwm ...... Etc,. etc,. etc," You can respond with "Gibberish" or "TL;DR" or "To Complicated, please simplify"

Overall it is not the CPM's job to be a Think Tank, Press Secretaries, Community Team Members, or even a Jedi Council. If you ever become a CPM it becomes rather clear what we don't do but its very hard at times to describe what we do to you guys. There is really not much room for personal bias because the developers themselves are just as smart as we are when it comes to new ideas or seeing how bad an idea is and unlike you guys our ideas get shot down in real time where people on the forums are likely to never get shot down ever by the devs.
Not to argue that crowdsourcing DOES have its benefits in games like most MMOs I have seen crowdsourcing go entirely the wrong way. After all according to the 'community guys' of the MAG that is what killed MAG to some extent was that the developers did listen to the 'crowdsourced' feedback and delivered a patch which made quite a few people quit.
Inversely ignoring all feedback is a dangerous precedent as clearly shown in Planetside 2 where they ditched the 4th continent and meaningful battles for MLG game play instead.
Oh trust me, I know the CPM does a good job. I've read alot of the post and appreciate the time it takes to read and reply. I also know that the NDA is murder. I couldn't live under an NDA, so I would never agree to be a CPM even if I was somehow magically popular.
This idea is mostly what I feel would be best for bringing the community together and ideas in an easy to read and understand format. Currently the forums are a joke. I crack the joke that the forums are where ideas go to die, not be discussed. The overall layout of the forums and using it for a medium of balance and ideology is dated and waste alot of time. The Dust Cloud can be used in conjunction with the CPM, however the idea was spawned by Nova Knife's topic about the dissolution of the CPM council.
If possible I would like your comment about the idea itself rather then the first 3 sentences of my post. Even though they can be exponded upon as a topic themselves, and has been beaten to death in other threads. |
