Last weekend I not only enjoyed my new PS3 (thanks again CCP) but also FF XIV Beta, when I noticed something, and wondered why Dust 514 cannot do this...
In my Living room I started my PS3, logged into FF XIV and started playing. I then fired up my other PS3, same PSN account, and of course if you log in on a different console, you get disconnected from PSN on the first one.
In FF XIV I could just click away the message and continue to play, without PSN connected.
On the 2nd Console I could play Dust 514 just fine.
Makes me wonder why Dust 514 needs PSN after you logged into the game / TQ Server and FF XIV not.... |

FFXIV developers know how to use multi-platforms. FFXIV would have even been an Xbox game but Xbox has miserable management. FFXIV beta is a fun game. I 'm ready for the 28th for more testing! Roegdyn Melee all the way. |

Because Dust 514 is a game that constantly streams data back and forth between you and Tranquility, pretty much every part of the game does that. |

Rapid Turn Based RPGs don't need that much of a latency to play though also the client and server are both very capable of predicting what WILL happen in the next few seconds. Its not like an FPS where things are much more unpredictable. |

And? So does FF XIV (FYI: its a MMO not a Offline game). A connection between ME and TQ does, in theory, not require a PSN connection, that could possibly add latency.. |

DUST is the only game on PS3 that has content streaming. it has nothing to do with latency. It has to do with the way game is updated. |

Portal did the whole Play together between PS3 and PC in their COOP mode, FF:XI had the PS2 and PC play on the same server part already done, what makes this 'Content Streaming' so special?
I don't get it.

I dont get it too and I'm not bad with Networking.
I do understand that for the initial connection (when you start Dust) you need a PSN connection for proper authentication and possible licence checks / game updates. But once you pass this, basicly after Character selection, the Content and Data streams during playing the game is between ME and CCP. It should not require a PSN connection in theory...
This is exactly how it is in FF XVI...
This would get rid of any PSN related problems. Like if your ingame Dust, and PSN goes down, you could still continue playing unlike the way it currently is and you have to wait till PSN is back on...
The ONLY reason I can think of is Merc Pack purchases that are handled via PSN store, but then again, a simple check and a login would fix this... |
