I have heard some Dev discussion on introducing deployable shields (bubbles). I thought came to mind on how to make these bubbles more interesting in both a tactical and gameplay sense.
Please, consider the following.
These shield bubbles will be able to absorb massive amounts of damage while the protected mercenary inside is free to fire from within the bubble on outside targets with little hindrance to their own weapon's damage output. The picture I have currently painted seems egregiously OP in the hands of a heavy machine gunner. Here comes the turn. Weapon fire within the bubble creates resonance that affects the vision and auditory systems of a merc's suit. The resonance is proportional to the DPS of the weapon being used. Extending use of a high powered weapon in the bubble creates a higher degree of screen blur and targeting reticule misalignment.
You would have something that looks like this. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WTrUCy3iKOo
Leaving the bubble would drastically reduce this blur; however, residual blur would remain for a few seconds.
In summary, you can be a drunk heavy with this design. |

Melee damage would not count toward this resonance meter. Additionally, bubbles could be seen from the aerial map. |

In the context of heavy machine gun users this would enhance their ability to create a fortified area of denial; however, this would be at the expense of their awareness capabilities. Thus further requiring the need of a partner or squad compliment, such as a dedicated repair logi standing outside the bubble calling out target vectors. |

This would have to cost some pretty high powergrid and CPU goodies though, if it were made an expensive mod, specialist Logi's would be the only ones able to use it. |

Rather than making the distortion a property of the suit, why not make it a property of the bubble? As they shoot through the bubble, the bubble has a ripple effect that increases the difficulty of seeing through the bubble on both sides. Eventually, the bubble would be impossible to see through for both sides.
This would add both pros and cons to being in the bubble while it is too blurry to see through.
Since the people inside the bubble can't see out while firing continuously, enemies can easily flank the bubble and jump inside to kill the occupants. However, those outside also can't see inside, so they could jump in expecting a lone heavy and find a heavy with two shotgunners.
Another thing I would like to see is for the shields to be neutral. In other words, shots outside the shield damage the shield, shots inside the shield wont. This way if someone from team A plants a shield bubble, someone from team B can run in, kill them, and use the bubble for themselves. |

Fantastic idea! I take it this would extend to partially concealing structures and equipment in the bubble as well. Placing a bubble on an null canon and intentionally distorting the field would make for some interesting defensive tactics. I'd certainly hesitate walking into such a bubble for the obvious risk that someone is hiding their remote explosives.
I agree with the point of shields being neutral. In the scenario I was just talking about, a concealed null canon might give a hacker a much needed reprieve from sniper fire.

if any one has played the game Quake wars enemy territory maybe the shields could look some what like the deployable shields in that game.

What would be some reasonable stats for the class tiers of these defense bubbles?
Standard Variant: -Range {3.5m radius] -External Hp Absorption before failure {600Hp} -Peak Resonance Distortion {150Hp of Weapon Damage in Pass Through Shots} -No Resonance Cool Down
Advanced Variant: -Range {5.5m radius} -External Hp Absorption {2700Hp} -Peak Resonance Distortion {450Hp} -Resonance Cool Down {6 seconds}
Proto Vairant: -Range {7 radius} -External Hp Absorption {7400Hp} -Peak Resonance Distortion {825Hp} -Resonance Cool Down {15 Seconds |

it b easier if the bubble was indestructible but was time based. proto versions just last longer than the previous tiers and have more bubble radius |

So all variants would be able to protect the occupant from an orbital strike? |

Me neither. A part of me would love to see a variation that deploys a small cluster of opaque mini-shield domes. I am imaging a scenario where you can literally play a game of shells with the enemy. They have no idea if the shell actually contains a merc inside waiting on a distant observer for the signal to strike. It could work as a 'psychological' area of denial weapon. |
