At the moment I've not spent any skill points on anything but Armour and Shield upgrades. Now I've started looking at the Armour plating and shield extension skills.
My first question is this. If I decide I want to play a heavy, is it worth taking the shield extension skill to five? Is it used in the high slots or are damage mods the norm?
Alternatively if I decide to go for a more Scout or Assault orientated route, is it worth taking armour extensions to five?
Just now I'm running around in weapons and armour from one the packs and enjoying the variety. Yeah I die loads, but I'm not bothered about K/D ratio. So I'm trying to flesh out the core skills before deciding on a weapon. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Also, if you think it's worth getting any of the other suit upgrade skills before picking a weapon please say. |

As a heavy I'd suggest upgrading your armour first, specifically trying to get the complex armour repairers. Those are over twice as good as the normal ones and you'll actually regenerate at a somewhat decent rate. If you're a heavy you might as well take advantage of the heavy weapon slot and use the HMG. That'll mow down infantry at close range, though it's a little worse at longer range. You might want to just try the medium frames first, though. |

Hmm the lowest tier suits only have two slots? Is it best to go with one rep and one plate if going heavy? |

There isn't really a "Best". It depends heavily on your plays style.
The plates will slow you down, but give you a nice buffer to absorb hits. You'll take a long time to get that back though unless there's a friendly Logi nearby.
Alternatively, the reppers won't give you the buffer, but you'll heal up quicker.
So, do you find yourself in long drawn out fights where the plates may be superior to the reppers, or do you find yourself in rapid succession fights with a little time in between where your reppers might repair you up in between?
Mixing can work for you or against you.
Either way, you'll need to adjust your play style to accommodate what your suit is capable of. For instance - with plates you're going to want to hit hard and once engaged, make sure you get a kill before you run out of HP. With the reppers, you'll want to move in and out of cover to give your reppers time to heal you up some before each hit.
Shields are also fine. They will give you a buffer without slowing you down, but are subject to instant erasure from flux grenades and some other weapons also have a bonus against shields.
