So I'm pretty new to the game. I played DUST during the open BETA for a an hour or so a few months back and today marks the first day I've been back since the official release. I managed to do extremely well shooting my way through the academy (I was hitting the top three of my team in every game) and then started on the Mercenary matches. To my surprise, it's a whole different league all together. After doing a little research on the market I found that 90% of those who I was running into were equipped with a lot of prototype gear. I thought to myself, 'Okay, we'll give these matches a wide birth until my gear is good enough to at least stand on even grounds'. Going back to the instant battles option (now having the ability to choose between a number of game modes) I was looking forward to jumping in with players with a similar level to that of myself however all I found was the exact same thing. Guys running around with tier 5 gear killing me more or less instantly whilst at the same time, eating at the very least a full clip from my assault rifle.
Now this can't be right can it? Literally every game that I've been in since leaving the academy, I've either been stripped naked, bent over and down right spanked or I'm being laughed at by light framers running circles around me.
I don't know what to say... I have no clue on how to advance from here. I've changed both tactics and gear to meet the exact same results. I don't suppose anyone else has been through this and survived long enough to acquire the skill points in order to match these evil people? If so, what are your secrets?!
I'm enjoying DUST but right now I'm completely baffled. I mean, I know I'm not this bad at FPS games (despite the statistics today). |

You are not alone. I've been running a new character lately, and throughout the academy I was doing great. Graduated in a few hours of gameplay, left with 2.0 kdr, and after a weedend of playing in the deep end of the pool I experience a good amount of what you're going through. The worst part is how inferior a young character's damage is even when you optimally distribute SP and pick the right gear. You have a lot of hit points to shoot through, while not having much of your own. It's rough no matter how good you are, especially if you're running solo.
Current answer I can give is, try to work as a team as much as you can, don't lose sleep over KDR, and hope for some sort of skill based matchmaking in the future. |

Work on leveling up your core skills. Forget proto anything for now. You don't need it.
You need to dump skills into the one weapon you are going to use, and passive skills like Handheld Weaponry, Dropsuit Engineering, Dropsuit Shield, Biotic Something, etc. You want these skills because they give you passive boosts; +2%dmg, +5% shield, +5%armour, +1% speed, etc.
Skill up proficiency in your weapon. It's a 'free' permanent damage mod.
All these give you a 'free' boost to your base stats. Think of these as 'free' modules. I use milita 90% of the time in pubs. My suit costs 3.5k. I tear a$$.
Just keep at it. :) |
