Hello,
I had a search of the forums. Couldn't find this anywhere. But is it possible to download the game to a hard drive / USB from your computer and then install it from that to your ps3. Similar to the way you can update your ps3 software.
I only ask as rural people (particularly in aus) have very slow and crappy Internet connections. I would like to be able to install dust on the ps3 back home but its just not viable downloading that much information on the connection that is available.
Is this possible? Or will I have to kidnap the ps3 next time I head back to the city? ;)
Cheers,
P.s how big is the initial installation ? I'm talking in MB,

Pretty sure it's not possible. Hey, if your home connection is that slow, can you even play online without being disconnected all the time? |

I...THINK you can use the Playstation Store from your computer now some kind of way, so it should be possible to do it that way. However, once you install the game, there's a several GB large patch you have to download, which can only be done from the PS3 as far as I'm aware. |

It's not the bandwidth that's the issue... It's the stability of the connection (drops out occasionally) and the data cap. The net connections more than capable of keeping a low ping. And fps's don't chew through a lot of data. It's just this initial install and apparently now the patch that's going to be an issue. :/ |

There actually is a way to do this using a intranet proxy program to intercept the files as they are being requested from the PSN store. It also speeds the downloads by a multiple = to (Your Maximum Connection Bandwidth / 15 Mbit) as the PSN is limited to 15 Mbit per active connection *after overhead*.
Its not the easiest thing for people who don't know much about networking to setup but if you want to give it a try here is a link http://www.ps3trophies.org/forum/general-ps3-discussion/186406-psn-downloader-cf3b5.html
This process will work for Patches as well.
Note: You will have to cart your PS3 to whatever computer you set this up on to make the initial server query. Or you could use some tunneling to get around that but well I'm not going to help you with that.
Edit: Just noticed my alliance is missing as well. |

as a simple question for the op though, why not carry ur ps3 to where ever you'd be downloading the game and patches onto a hard drive and downloading them on to ur ps3 there ? |

A lot of places offer free wifi. You could use a power inverter in your car to plug in PS3, 12v car monitor. Have lunch while downloading. You could even play a couple matches in Mc'ds parking lot. :) |

Haha. So there's not a simple way of doing it. Ahh well.
Also the play station that is out in the country is my brothers, as I only go home (from the city) once every few months I was hoping for a work around (just take home a flash drive next trip :D). Looks like he will have to go without dust ;)
It would be nice if CCP included a way to download it from the psn manually to an external device like their updates.... But that's probably a licensing /copyright issue.
Thanks anyway.
Ps. PsychoLogiKal ill try the way you suggested :P

Also using a proxy server to do this is fkin easy. Don't act like this is some advanced thing that only people that know about networking can do. Anyone with half a brain can do this. |

You are not allowed to do this because it can allow people to exploit the ps3 system (Hackers would be able to pirate games) |

Point out a single thing in there that is not as it is. Can you not get it to work? Is this maybe why you're ignorant to the fact that this does work and that the network is limited as such?
BTW the average person has no clue what a proxy server even is or for that matter how to hook up a ethernet cable to their pc and share the i-net across from pc to another device, hence the comment about needing to know a lil about networking moron.
I've built computers from chips and wafers in the 80's, been privileged to have taken part in a couple think tank projects and have worked on military electronic attack aircraft for a portion of my life, tell me I don't know what I'm talking about again.
p.s. Nowhere in the Sony license agreement does it say that this can't be done. It is just another way of networking your connection to the system. If there were provisos about this style of internet sharing between connections there would have to be a clause in there for each and every style of networking option / setup available to bring internet from the wall / air *however you receive packets* and pass them onto the PS3. Also why include the proxy options in the networking setup if they don't allow you to use them? |

No, you can't do this. You will need to download the game from the PS Store.

Nice to know that GM Hercules read the posts following the OP since I provided a way to pull it off but according to him "No, you can't do this." Such a final answer for something that can't be done in the conventional way of downloading and patching but I provided a workaround that does work because I have used that exact process many times for big downloads that i want to go faster. |

I think that although doing an update from a memory stick or external drive would be nice, it would also make hacking the game relatively easy for those in the know. This safegaurds all their loyal customers from script kiddies everywhere and I wouldn't have it any other way. |
