I downloaded DCUO a couple of weeks ago (was so big it took 3 days!) and have been getting a great insight into the only other game on the PS3 (or any console) that tries to run a free to play model. It's an eye opener and gives a good example of what CCP is doing right.
I like DCUO - it's fun and there's lots to do (PVP and PVE!). But there is one thing (aside from the really annoying voice chat and terrible audio bugs) that really annoys me - it's not really free to play; it's freemium. Basically, you can play the game pretty much normally without paying anything at all but once you reach the endgame, you start to realise that you can't do or get everything that paying players do:
1) power/weapon sets - around a 1/3 of the power sets are paid only; there are also certain weapons you can only get by paying. 2) weekly alerts - there are around a dozen alerts (raids) that can be done but several can only be accessed after buying DLC. 3) wallet size - this is really the big one for me; without paying for a 'legendary' membership, you can only spend up to 1500 in the stores in one go. There are huge numbers of significant items that cost more than 1500 (I can't remember what they call the currency). Some of these items are crafting bits and bobs that allow you to upgrade your equipment - without them you are left to get only around a 1% boost to any stats against the 10% - 20% boost that the best mods can reach. 4) another big one is that only paid players can trade with one another!
Okay, so to my point already - I know Dust is far from perfect and there are items on the market that don't have isk equivalents but they are few and not really game changing. My point is that in Dust, pretty much everything you can get by paying, you can also get by playing for longer. This in my view is the way all F2P games should be run. DCUO pees me off because there are certain aspects of the game I will never have access to. So, thank you CCP for doing F2P right and not shutting out non-paying players from enjoying all aspects of this game.
*Please don't post stuff about P2W or any of that nonsense - that is not what this thread is about. |

Finally someone who shares the same thoughts as me! I love the fact that you can play dust without spending a single penny and still have the entire game available to you. As someone who has played DCUO, freemium is very frustrating!
P.S.
I hate players who cry Dust is P2W. You have access to everything people who spend money do, you just have to work for it a little harder then they do. |

I've played just about every "Free" online game out there from the Dungeon Fighter Online to GW2 and have been arguing this point to the idiots on here. Dust 514 is not pay to win! It's a little money grabby at best, but you can still have access to everything without paying a cent which is the only reason why I still play. The bigger issue is if it's still worth the price...
(Think about that for a moment.) |
