I've been noticing this a lot lately. Many weapons have variants that do the same things as other weapons, either being significantly sub-par or completely out-doing its competition, or just being annoying by taking on a role that is already filled and doing nothing original. For instance, the assault scrambler rifle is supposed to do the job of the standard AR, even though the original scrambler rifle was supposed to do something different. The tac-ar takes on the role of the the tac-sniper and beats its DPS and versatility while having still significant zoom and effective range. And besides, the AR can pretty much take on the role of every other weapon. |

That's what they're supposed to do.
- The Amarr Assault Scrambler Rifle is the Amarr attempt at mimicking the Gallente Assault Rifle
- The Gallente Tactical Assault Rifle is the Gallente attempt at mimicking the Amarr Scrambler Rifle
It's the same for all the other variants too, but the Minmatar Combat Rifle (Burst) and the Caldari Rail Rifle (Breach) haven't been added yet. Each race will have its own attempt at copying the standard version of the other races assault rifle using an altered version of their own.
So in the future we will see an Assault, Breach, Burst, and Tactical variant for all the racial rifles. |

each race will have a weapon for each role, not necessarily a great one.
Caldari shotgun and gallente sniper will probably be bad, especially when compared to the gallente shotgun and caldari sniper. Long range shotgun and short range sniper will be subpar most of the time, but may have a small niche or be loved by the roleplay purists. Best performance will be had by mixing races to get best of everything.
Each role will have at least 4 weapons filling it to some degree, once all main factions have gear we may or may not get pirate faction gear and/or more weapons to existing roles/more roles. Five years from now we could well have 50-60 different variants of a rifle between subtypes and the different races. 4 main factions, 5 major pirate faction, secondary tech types of main factions, ect.. could result in dozen types of "assault rifles" beside the one that is called that in game. Each could have 5-6 variants not counting tiers.
Or take the plasma cannon. Not as good as a swarm as av and not as good as a mass driver at aoe anti-infantry. But it is better av then a mass driver and better ai then swarm. It is not as much worse at those roles as a new role in between.
It also works as a good place holder for both for gallente till other races get all current roles, then gallente can get those two roles and other 3 races a weapon to fill the between role.
Squad of two ar, swarm, mass driver is about even with two ar and 2 plasma squad vs infantry or vehicles, just diffrent approunch to the same problem.
Tac sniper has much longer range then tac-ar, close in designated marksmen role is better filled by the tac-ar. Tac-sniper works well from longer range.
To use a colour analogy, we don't need distinct patches of colour. A rainbow works fine, having orange dosen't make red and yellow obsolete and orange isn't useless since we have yellow and red already. Even if some of the colours in the middle of red and orange area are hard to tell if they are red or orange. |
