The difference between the shows is the characters and how plot unfolds.

Sword Art Online characters are fan-heavy. They're well designed, cute, and lovable. Lots of emphasis on individuals. You can see characters go through both love and anguish - and you feel involved every minute of it. The actual show falls a part because of jumping time-lines, but the jumping stops when where the show gets the most interesting - so it can be forgiven for trying to get past all the earlier fluff. However, this takes away from the plot, as it's easy to tell the writers want you to focus on the main story - and not enjoy he incredible world that the show is built on.

Where as Log Horizon characters are more compact in diversity - the loss of anything constant other then the world toned down the characters growth, as they have nothing to fear. But since the show has no focus on mortality - it put A LOT OF FOCUS ON PLOT. But it has the same failings of SAO - just not as noticeable. The early plot is fluff and introductions, in an attempt to create the sense of 'evil genius with good intentions' on the main guys part. SAO does this as well - but the time-line jumps are just waaaay too noticeable.

When matched up - SAO wins. Simply because character progression is more to behold in SAO then Log Horizon - where there's almost none. Log Horizons story may be better - but enjoying the story and being engulfed by the characters in it are two different things - and characters are what make a story for me.

You can have the worst plot in history - awesome characters make up for it. Example: FLCL

But seriously - go watch Log Horizon. It's last few episodes were damn. :3

It's a good thing I read SAO first. I watched SAO after I read the LN, and the LN is farrrr better. I didn't have any of the time skips in the first volume but rather saved them all and told them in the second volume as extras of I remember correctly. Alright I'll watch log horizon.
