As most of you know, Dust 514 was originally created via the source engine Carbon, the same engine they used to build EVE Online. This was around 2009, I believe. It was officially unveiled at E3 in 2011 and a beta was promised before the end of 2011 and a release date of 2012. But around that time, something horribly went wrong. The carbon engine had melted the PS3. It turned into a crapstorm and CCP pushed the date back to 2013 to re-work on it using Unreal Engine 3. Since the Unreal Engine was a new territory for them, it was a steep learning curve and a rough road for everyone. Dust 514 broke the world record for having the longest beta and that is why it took them a long time to slowly update everything using a different engine. But the truth is that they still have the original source code of Dust 514 preserved for PS4, with ideas and fixes they got from the current Dust 514 that we are on now. Let me simply point out the complexity of PS3. It is notoriously difficult for most developers to work with because of the cell processors and the memory constraints in the black box. Since the Carbon engine melted the so-called "high-powered" PS3, that should surpass CCP developers' expectations of having good programming skills. They could have done the same with Unreal source code if given the time. It's like being experienced with Photoshop and when a project backfires, the company shoves Adobe Illustrator on you when you don't know it too well and the project is delayed because of that. I do not know too much about Sony's involvement in this process, but anyway most of this information is from bits and pieces I've picked up on the alternative news and in the forums so far. If I somehow got this information wrong, feel free to correct me. I hope that most of those that read this understand more about what CCP is going through and that it is not their fault. It is their game, their show, and we are just the participators. The complains will never stop, especially with newberries not knowing or being ignorant about CCP's development process. Most of us that stay with Dust are here to help give polite feedback and request suggestions. It is all of us together that help CCP make it better however small our contribution may be that will expand Dust into a grand game of the future that will stand out among the AAA titles. |
