Hello, Dusties. Love this game so far...if not because it's fun (sometimes it isn't) then because it's quite intriguing and has a lot of potential. And free, did I mention that? And since this kind of feedback seems to be what drives this whole thing forward, I'm happy to participate.
Keep in mind, I've only been playing since Uprising's release, and even then only sparsely. I haven't joined a corporation or even run with a consistent squad, so I don't have a full picture of the game. However, I feel like the point where I am is where a lot of players will decide whether they keep playing or go back to their standbys, so I wanted to share some of the reasons I will be sticking with Dust. At least for a little while.
First, the good. There is a lot of good, but I'm only going to mention a few things I really like.
- I like the obvious effort by the CCP to make this a team-oriented, tactical, strategic game and not just another shooter with some extra bells and whistles. It is clear that with a good squad and/or teamGÇöone that communicates and works together wellGÇöyou can do better than you could as a group of free agents.
- I like the diversity and complexity of the character and vehicle fitting/upgrade system, despite its steep learning curve. I think players can be optimistic about the way the game will be improved and balanced with further expansion, but it already has a strong foundation.
- I like that, basically, new players are given full visibility of what is to come once they gain the necessary experience. This really keeps me going despite the following negative aspects of my experience being a new player.
Now for the bad. I do fully realize that beggars can't be choosers here, but I feel like if I was going to quit playing this game, these would be the reasons.
- The transition from Academy to Big Girl Land is sudden and frustrating. Academy play is balanced and challenging, and you can be sure that if a player is really strong in one way he will be weak in another, because everyone has about the same skill level. Once a players leaves AcademyGÇöan event that isn't announced or warned aboutGÇögameplay becomes futile, one-sided, and incredibly infuriating as players with 700k SP are sent to their numerous deaths at the hands of players with millions of SP.
- Menus and social tools seem rather poorly thought-out. Squad invites, voice chat, and all the other things that enable team-oriented, strategic play are a real pain to activate and negotiate. (unable to invite squad members to a squad, voice chat switching between channels, no hooks into PSN controls to invite PSN friends to play, etc.)
- Redundant menu options and customization components result in an increase in perceived complexity. There are 3 different places to upgrade skills that look totally disparate, with no indication of how they relate to one another. Introductory tutorials and help explains the wrong aspects of play (seemingly in an effort to maintain the EVE/Dust universe) using language that is foreign to new users.
- No logout option? Really, guys?
- Everything is so permanent. I get that the Dust universe is harsh and unforgiving, but I'd still like to be able to undo skill point allocations or sell back items I don't need. I wouldn't be disillusioned by these additions.
Add to that list the weapon range limits (bullets that stop mid-air? must be the future), crazy a-holes with cars running me over, and light dropsuits with impenetrable armor (impenetrable, at least, by my puny weapons and skills) and sometimes this game gets so frustrating I'd like to quit. But hey, I'm a grade-A cheapskate, so I'm inclined to stick with it and complain on the forums, and see if it gets any better. Thanks for the free game and for being willing to take a chance on this community. Looking forward to seeing where Dust goes. |

I feels ya bro. As someone with only 4 million sp, I'm not sure if I qualify as not a noob, but even I feel these thing sometimes. The matchmaking is nonexistent after academy, and social tools are cool but overcomplex.
Honestly though, if you read the descriptions of the modules, you will see how they relate to each other, if they do at all, as most of the time the different slot sections are completely separate. The logout option has been asked for and CCP is just busy with bigger aspects of the game. And I don't mean to be a **** here, but things in DUST are permanent. If you buy something, you need to be sure you want it. As for skill investing, there should be a respec after academy. |

The light dropsuits are easy to kill... if you can hit them they survive by being fast or sneaky enough to avoid being hit in the first place. The Lavs being used are usually the free ones i personally use a forge gun to take them out although swarm launchers work pretty well. |

i understand how you feel, because the disparity from new players to those of use that were in the open beta is amazingly large, and i'm the low end of OB SP [only reaching 7mil last week.... yeah... there are people with over double this]. as far as what is good.. it is good, and will hopefully get better. the bad is what CCP is actually working on fixing, aside from the undoing of skillpoints. i'm afraid what you do now has a good deal of permanence, and you have to live with a slip up, it's even been announced that there will be no sold or given Respecs anymore, and there are lots of reasons behind that, main one is breaking the game and destroying the permanence |

Thanks for the replies, guys. Yeah, like I said...I'm sticking around. Some of my perceived "problems" I realize are just design decisions that probably make perfect sense to others, but I don't think I would be the first one to say this game could be more noob friendly.
Anyway, got my respect last night (thankfully I found it before they closed them off!) so I will definitely be doing my homework and playing around with militia builds before I sink my 3.5mil SP (on my other character) into anything. |

a degree of matchmaking is required , and IMO it could take two forms.
first you could have sp based match making in the coliseum matches, in story line these are meant to be sports , so matching equally skilled opponents up would make for the best sport. this would keep galactic space as it's meant to be, an unfair war.
second - high sec and low sec space could have meta level caps on gear, this doesn't limit the SP of the users just the gear they can bring to the battle, if they want to use higher tiered gear and make best use of their weapons they will need to move into null sec battles. still unfair as space is meant to be, but the users can pick their battles more appropriately. it's their fault for stepping into null sec unprepared.
users applying for a fight can filter the battles by the sector they are applying to. (i.e I could choose to join a battle within 0.3-0.0 space or 10-0.7.) and a battle that meets the criteria would be found.
if both methods are applied users should have a decent ramping up process into null sec space. |
