My DS can tank 4 RG shots from full health. I received, apparently, 28k damage in an instant. That's happened to me before and I came to the conclusion that the kill screen was reflecting the crash damage rather than the original weapon. If the shooter gets a mere asset when you crash the game thinks the planet killed you and awards the kill to the planet and an assist to the shooter. The weapon slot is blank because CCP didn't code the planet as a possible weapon. That leaves the original weapon a complete mystery. I didn't hit the ground.

I'm a dropship pilot, and nothing brings greater thrills than taking down one of my own kind. The air battles with other assault dropships are the most fun. |

Unless you fell through the mesh your ship did indeed hit the ground.
It happened after the killing blow (probably a railgun of some type) took out all your shields and armor so it wasn't the true cause of your demise, but the program considered it as the "final blow".
The final blow is what gets posted in the cause of death screen, so whenever you crash on fire and then blow up the listed cause will be the crash. Hence the huge "damage" amount.
Now CCP didn't code for a crash death so the death screen is a combination of the true killer's name and HP status, the crash damage, and the missing killing "weapon" (the ground).
They could fix it by counting the killing blow as the final blow in which case they could just list everything and we would know what performed the OHK. That would also reward the killer with the full points which is another complaint. |

You know when you're high up when you hit 0 HP, so when you fall you explode automatically after a few seconds? One of those deaths. Nothing hit me in the air, although I'm certain now I hit an invisible barrier. |

I had literally the same exact thing happen to me in my shield tanked Eryx, which had 4,100 in shields and 1,000 in armor. While i was hovering above the ground (not even moving an inch letting my turret gunners shoot below at enemies) my Eryx instantaneously imploded, no fire animation, no warning, just 1 second my shields and armor is max, and the next there is a poof and everyone in my dropship instantly died, and on the kill cam it all said we committed suicide. I was about 100 feet above the ground, hovering almost completely still. I have been hit by rail guns and assault forge guns and they take about 1/4th of the shield away, not all of it and my armor too in 1 shot, that's simply not manageable by any weapon in Dust currently whether that be an installation or a hand-held weapon. |

Did you happen to hover right over a null cannon by any chance? Those null cannons are powerful. |

I've been fortunate enough to not have this happen at all anymore, although posting this will more than likely jynx me, but i have gone through tons of matches in my Python at the height ceiling without exploding randomly. And looking back at Iron Wolf Sabre's posts it's so laughable that he makes those comments, because he must have no experience with dropships at all. Standard railgun installations do very, very little to dropships, and it's literally impossible, IMPOSSIBLE, for a railgun installation to aim as high as the height ceiling, no matter where you are in the map. Even low-tanked dropships (as long as they aren't milita). Even railgun tank snipers (while they do the most damage to dropships) still never take me out in only 1 shot. Any time that a proto-fitted dropship gets taken out with 1 shot it is an in-game error, because there is literally no weapon in dust's existence, even ones with damage mods, that can deal that sort of damage immediately. |

The MCC missles do 28k damage, i've tested it, and the null cannons that land on top of the MCC do about 6k if I remember. |

Oh believe me, it well could have been the MCC missles that rain from the sky, i have been hit about 3 times by them and it is a 1 shot kill, but that's an in-game scripted missle that's easily avoidable, this whole "1 shot 1 proto-dropship kill" thing however is never caused by another player firing at it on the ground. |
