Anyone that's played the original PlanetSide will already know exactly what I'm talking about.
What I propose is an area we can access from the merc quarters that would allow us to requisition any armour, weapon, or piece of equipment (which will disappear when we leave the area), and target dummies that have the same base stats as the various suits and vehicles in the game. These dummies would be totally stationary.
The purpose of this would be to let people test out various equipment and weapons and figure out how they handle and perform prior to investing potentially millions of SP into unlocking them for use in actual matches. Needless to say, this is invaluable, compared to figuring out just how that missile launcher works and locks on while trying to kill the tank shooting at you.
As PlanetSide also had, there should be a vehicle test area in which we can try these and their various weapon options out as well, so as to get an idea of just how they handle and behave (no need for target dummies here), especially given the massive SP and ISK investment for vehicles at the moment.
This wouldn't threaten gameplay, as with just stationary targets what fun is there? It would also provide people woth first hand experience with the things that they might then decide to strive and work towards to use in real fights. It's one thing to read a description or a stat breakdown, but another entirely to know just how that weapon works and behaves before you make the commitment to skill for and purchase it. |

+1
While waiting for bells and whistles , consider this approach:
#0 Make your corp (if you ceo/direct one, skip to #1). 15 instant battles (including Academy) in free militia gear should give you some basic game experience and money necessary (~1.600.000 ISK) to start your own corp and buy some gear. You should be able to do(grind) this in 5 hour at max. Spread it over couple of days if necessary...
#1 Make an alt. Put her/him into your corp. Give her/him ISK for shopping. Buy some toys on market. Militia HAVs, LAVs, DSs and weapons.
#2 Any map is big enough now to allow you going to the "edge" of it without the fear of being targeted and constantly killed. Go there. Then take your toys and friends there. Do some fooling around shooting at each other or free LAVs. You will not get kills but you can improve your aiming and familiarize with game mechanics. You can give back earned ISK to your corp and have a double benefit.
#3 And anytime you can get back to fighting if you happen to get bored with training.
Is it OK for you? |

At fanfest CCP said they plan a testing range for stuff you can buy on the market. So you test the stuff before you actually buy it. I know thats not exactly a testing range for trainings but better than nothing :) |

It's not about practice but literally familiarization with the gear. Not to mention your suggestion hurts the team; I hate people that goof off or killwhore at the expense of the team and the match. |

Not to mention your suggestion hurts the team; I hate people that goof off or killwhore at the expense of the team and the match. I agree with you on "not helping" the team issue. If you practice alone you do this at the expense of the team work experience... But if you bring a couple of friends with you...
When i choose particular match to practice dropship flying without engaging in fight i have constantly this nagging feeling "of being useless" at the back of my head. So i never do this the whole battle. On the other hand, instant battles have no influence on New Eden environment beside giving you more SP, WP and ISK and experience. In the long run they "do influence" you and you may later more prominently influence New Eden...
I wish CCP add a feature to Planetary Conquest allowing the owner corp to go to the owned district map 23/7 to have some drills for members... It could give more incentive to own a district... If you own it and can roam it when ether you want, you practically have a firing/test range... |
