Unless you're planning on running them side by side, it's never a good idea to start again from scratch.
And yes, Gallente is very good for assault.

Gallente are bad at the standard level and 100% useless at the Militia level.
However when you go up to advanced and prototype level's, the suit becomes a beast.

Here is my advanced suit fitting:
 1x Complex Armor plate
 1x Basic armor plate
 1x Complex Armor repairer
 2x Enhanced Damage modifiers
GEK 38 AR / GLU TAC AR
 Toxin SMG
 Locus grenades
 Nanohive

 Tactics:
1v1 you are unbeatable even against a heavy, because you have high tank and high DPS.
Outside of that, you are weak sauce since taking cover won't regenerate health at a good speed.
Try to rely on your shield more than on your armor, since it regenerates quickly.
As in, once shield is down, don't wait for armor, go into cover.

I've always found Gallente to be the worst assault players, but that is likely because I use a lot of explosives when i play.

A fit like this serves me well. When Im not outnumbered 5 to 1 or stuck on terrain or when my shots actually land or when my bullets don't bounce off the opposing player because at the moment, for some inexplicable reason they appear to be immune to mortal weapons.

One extra tip I can give, is to charge Caldari suits with a flux. At first they think you're an idiot, and then all of a sudden they're down to a pathetic amount of armour, and a toxin pointed at their head.

I like the idea of "suicide" with flux nades. The only problem with that idea is your slow ass armor tanked suit will likely get murdered while it waddles into flux range...

Ive been doing a lot of research looking into what suit to pick with the respec. Amarr and Gallante offer the most variation of style, so you wont feel "stuck" picking either one. Low slots allow you to customize tank versus speed versus recon etc pretty well. Plus the Amarr PG/CPU and EHP base is super high, where the Gallante gives you a good discount off your light weapons with its spec skill.

So the point is, if you are uncertain, both Amarr and Gallante are solid choices because you have more room to customize your play style. Caldari and Mimatar limit you to sort being a high shield/high damage.
