I'm still relatively new in Dust, so I'm really wondering how you guys decide where to spend your sp. I haven't really skilled into anything yet (following the recent sp refund), and I'm sort of hesitant to invest sp into skills that I may end up hating.
Do you guys have any thoughts about how to decide what goes where? Is there any "simulator" room I can go in and try out the weapons before I commit? I noticed not all of the weapons are represented by militia gear, so it's really frustrating that I can't decide how well I'd work out with a laser rifle, for example, before dropping sp into it.
Thanks for any suggestions!

If I know what I want, I tend to go for a go to fit then skill whatever I need for that fit.
Then, if I want to expand my role, I tend to get the ADV version of the equipment or module. I am hesitant to go proto unless I have the core skills to back it up.
When in doubt, core tends to be more forgiving as to buffs and nerfs. Also, ADV nets solid builds for relatively little SP compared to proto and not too heavy of an isk investment. |

Just kidding. The best thing to do is just spend it any old way. You get a couple of respecs every few weeks, so then you can refine your choices. Which, of course, will then be bad ones because what you skilled into will get exploited and nerfed. |

Firstly, the upcoming opt-in respec is the last one we're getting (most likely anyways) so be careful what you do.
There is plenty of militia equipment and vehicles you can try out, all requiring 0 skillpoints. They are vastly inferior to their standard / advanced / prototype counterparts, but provide you with an idea as for what you're getting in to. Try militia guns / modules / equipment / vehicles and see what floats your spaceship.
Edit: I didn't see the part about no militia laser rifle. In those cases, skilling to level 1 won't hurt you in the long run. It's maybe 12k for a standard laser rifle, which can be made up in a couple of skirmish matches.
As for the HMG / forge, which requirea more skills... I'll leave that up to you. You may need their prerequisite skills for buffing other guns, so it won't gimp you. Posting from my phone at work, hit me up in-game later tonight if you need some help. I mostly do shield tanks and have been playing since closed beta. |

I would recommend speccing into all the passive skills. For example, shield operation and management grant you a bit more survivability, and is useful across all suits, as is Field Mechanics. While you're skilling into those, play around with a few weapons and try to decide what you like best. Once you've picked, skill into the relevant rapid reload skill. For example, if you choose AR, skill into Light Weapon Rapid Reload, and capacity.
Then start skilling into the weapon itself, while at the same time trying to get into a standard suit of your choosing. From there, you should be fine. |

Awesome thanks for the replies! I actually haven't spent any of the sp since the last refund, and I thought the upcoming opt-in was for special cases.
But good to know about the passive skills. I'll have to take a look at the skill tree when I get home. |
