I have played Planetside 2 and they have a Training Area where players can just go and practice... either individually or as a group. The players can experiment with any weapon and configuration to see if it is worth training for. I found it very useful for just learning to do basic things... like flying... which one does not really need to learn in the midst of battle. This would stop a lot of grief that players may get from their fellow teammates for screwing up a match because they were trying to learn something new. A Training Area would allow players to try things out without impacting a live match and thus encourage them to do more than just run around and be XP for the veteran players.
SOE does not get a lot of things right, but I have to give them a 'thumbs up' for their Training Area. Perhaps CCP should see how this has been a large benefit for most players and do something similar. It would allow players to just mess around with something to get the feel of it. It would also help level the playing field in the way of skill by not allowing the veterans here to completely dominate new players by just knowing how to play the game better... while the new players struggle just trying to figure out how to do the basics. Let's face it, that is a very big complaint about Dust right now and could adversely effect the development of a good player base. Come on... even Eve Online has tutorials and somewhat safe areas for the new players to learn in. Having a Training Area where one could fight PvE, like Eve Online asteroid belts, would be helpful as well. A Training Room similar to World of Tanks, where teammates could develop tactics and practice techniques is also worth designing. Dust is really lacking when it comes to this and is only reliving the old Eve Online learning curve bad press. The Training Battles are a good start, but more needs to be done... imo.
I understand that the Dust 514 Devs have a lot on their plate right now just trying to make this damn game work. However, the adverse first impression of Dust 514 that many 'former' players have expressed here and elsewhere is due to not having the ability to learn and train in the basics. Once these players get a bad taste for Dust 514, the chances of them returning when it is better is not really good. A Training Area 'should' be in the basic design of any game... but is seldom done except as an after thought,,, which is really a shame for a game like Dust that 'could' develop into a really good game in the future.

It will help newer players memorize maps and objectives as well, and when we can deploy installations such as immobile turrets it will allow us to find the best locations on the map for said turrets while playing/training with our buddies.
Most importantly to me it would allow us a safe zone to practice flight without getting shot at. Once we have a really good feel for how dropships operate and respond to control inputs, then it makes getting shot at a lot less stressful to someone who just spent a lot of SP and ISK for his brand new dropships only to have someone in a Railgun installation peck away at him while he's on the other side of the map. |
