Hi all,
Over the last few days, my housemate (who is a non-Eve player - he played a trial but got bored of it), and another mate (again a non-eve player), have been playing Dust.
After hearing a slew of complaints, I thought I'd post them here to give players/Devs a view of the game from someone who doesn't play Eve. He also plays CoD so he does acknowledge some of this is just the difference in the game such as Dust requires cover and hiding a bit more.
Now I'm sure some of you may say "if you don't like Eve you won't like dust". But then isn't the purpose of Dust to bring new players into the New Eden universe, so it should appeal to non-eve players?
OK so here goes...
============
Issues/impressions from a Non-Eve player
- Vehicles are too difficult to destroy
Running people over in the LAV's is fun but it seems almost to easy as small arms fire isn't generally enough to destroy one. This is compounded by the fact the starter suit that deals with LAVs and HAV's is useless against anything else. Its almost like you should spawn a LAV run people over then just get out when its damaged (if you cant just drive away from the danger) A couple of times I have tried to deal with the threat of a HAV or a LAV, I have shot them down to low health then the occupant just jumps out when he knows the next hit will kill them. This then leaves the team a man down effectively because you cant engage infantry with that fitting (the starter anti-tank fitting).
- Aiming is a little weird
When looking down your weapon the tracking seems too slow even when the sensitivity is set at the highest. Add to this the fact that the iron sights aren't the best option (the ability to add a red-dot sight would be great).
- Melee is not one-hit kill/not damaging enough
If you have the guts/advantage to get close enough to melee someone, a melee attack should be much more deadly than it currently is (with the butt of a gun). I don't think it should be an automatic kill on someone with full shields and amour because that would be a little too good, but I do feel it is a little under-powered.
- Nova knives should replace your gun melee
Having Nova Knives be a weapon which you have to "switch to" to use makes them much more difficult, especially when they then have to charge up to be more effective.
- Grenade issues
The grenade throwing distance feels a little too short. Another slight issue (this may simply be preference from other FPS games) is that the grenade button doesn't override the trigger (throwing a grenade requires taking your finger off the trigger before pressing the grenade button).
============
I'm sure the both of us would appreciate some feedback on the above points, including counter-arguments for each point (to give my housemate a different view on them).
Thanks for reading everyone.

Addressing each point in turn...
I'm of the view that LAV's, or at least the lower tier ones, should be very easy to destroy. For example, a well placed FG hit, or a well-thrown AV grenade. LAV's can outrun swarms, and swarms were never really meant to counter LAV's anyway. So yes, I agree. Except I've dealt with plenty of people using the militia scrambler pistol after swapping from an FG.
I believe this is being looked at.
It's not meant to be able to. As a scout, you're quick enough to run up to anyone and, if melee was one hit kill, kill them before they knew what was happening. There'd be absolutely no point to the shotgun anymore. It would make the scout class OP. Besides which, nova knives are one or two hit kills anyway, so if you explicitly want to melee, then go with them instead.
Most people who run nova knives do so as a primary. They're only really viable on the scout, and using them is a huge risk. Most everyone else uses a proper primary and a backup sidearm, e.g. the TAR and the Flaylock.
It makes sense that there's a small delay, although that might just be input lag. This might be intentional rather than accidental. |

The Anti-Armor starter fit has a Militia Scrambler Pistol, quite possibly one of the best guns in the game for CQC if you can reliably score headshots.
Aiming does feel a little odd, though it is something you'll get used to (at least, I seem to be).
Melee is working as intended, it is supposed to take multiple hits unless you fully upgrade hand-to-hand combat.
Nova Knives are a "swap to" weapon because they aren't intended to be the "push button" OHK found in other games (which is a good thing)
Grenades require you to not be holding down R1 because you need to take one hand off the gun so you can grab the grenade, activate it and then throw it at the reddot. There is no Martyrdom in Dust. |

With regards to the melee thing:
First, TTK is meant to be pretty high in this game.
Second, the CoD insta-kill knifes always felt really cheap to me - cutting someones toe should never be deadlier than a bunch of bullets to the chest.
Third, your reward for getting really close to someone is the insane damage done by charged nova knifes. |

The one that really stood out to me was the first complaint, about the vehicles.
In every other thread about vehicles you'll see complaints, both from vehicle operators and AV users, that vehicles are entirely too easy to kill. Now part of this problem might be that your friends are CoD types who aren't used to games where vehicles are anything but a fun diversion, but I feel that this also highlights a few very real problems with the DUST.
1) The free LAV. Seriously, it allows for the cheapest of all tactics, spamming a free vehicle and running people over with it. It annoys the absolute pants off of me, and I've been playing the game long enough to understand the meta game. For a new player just starting it has to be extremely frustrating. The free LAV really needs to go away. If you want a taxi, you should have to pay about 27,600 isk + fittings for it.
2) The lack of tutorial. I know CCP is working on this kind of thing, but I'm going to harp on it anyway. People coming in off the streets don't know about AV grenades, so they don't know how to defend themselves from vehicles. I assume they were using starter fits the whole time they played? Did they know about their 500k starter SP? Did they know about the market? I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't, because how would they? |
