I got bored one day, and realized how few other tankers there are so I typed this up so everyone can join in the entry curve(since people seem to think it's idiotically expensive to start off.) It's segmented into two parts from being too long to fit into a single post, here is the driving guide.
Driving tips:
"Active scanner, why would you use that?" you may ask after reading the fittings section, It doesn't seem terribly logical, does it? However with the current DUST build it's almost manditory. It gives your team a massive amount of situational awareness, and lets you know about those pesky scout suits that are loaded up with AV grenades before they can get on top of you and spam their payloads.
Enemies of the tank?: Infantry. Infantry. Infantry. Yes, it is primarily an anti infantry tool. But if you deploy a tank the opposing team is more likely to deploy /anti tank infantry/ than other tanks. You'll find yourself in a flurry of swarm launcher fire with the odd forge gun smacking at your hull in no time if you don't drive carefully.
How to avoid the enemy: This is where the active scanner comes in. Typically you'll want to place yourself near an objective and activate this constantly, usually an objective under assault, not only will it let your teammates know when someone's trying to sneak up on them but it will also let you know where the AV grenadiers and swarm launcher whores are before they can hit you. AVOID OVERHANGS! Especially if you know the enemy is there, keep a safe distance from these and pick off the enemy rather than drive right up. If you drive right up, you will die more quickly than you can say "Oh ****!" and back out. So, what we have thus far is keep a moderate range and abuse the **** out of your scanner while punching a hole in their defensive.
When to call in your tank?: Basically at the start of the game. It deters the other team from calling in their own from paranoia till yours is dead, and piloting right you won't die. I've lost around 20 soma's but only one Madrauger in my entire career, and have never come close to losing the second save for one situation that had me down to around 700 armor.
When to pull back?: If you find your armor dipping below half then it's time to pull back. Spam the active scanner, turn on your repper and wait for the determined few to trail you then pick them off and return to the front line. Repeat this as many times as you need to, and make use of cover in these situations quite heavily to avoid swarm launcher fire.
When to push forwards?: Move with your infantry. It's as much the bane of your enemy tankers as theirs are yours, move with your infantry and they will most of the time defend you automatically and assist you when people start getting too close to you. At the same time you are basically their sledgehammer to drive the nail, forcing the opposing infantry to take cover more often lightening the fire on your team and allowing them to push forwards. |

I'll add to this one thing I'v found that helped me be a better tanker is to also skill into av. Its hypocritical i know but if you learn the av tactics you will also learn what to watch out for in your tank. on the flip side if anyone wants some lessons on how to drive a tank send me a mail in game and I'll squad up with you and let you drive my tank as long as any tank losses are paid for. |

I recently started using an active scanner. I had my doubts but it has definitely increased my survivability. Unlike the OP I learned tanking by dying way to many times for any sane person to actually continue doing it, but everything he posted is good advice, although, when it comes to taking damage if I notice big spikes like AV fire in damage I normally start moving out if I stopped for any reason regardless of how much it is. I dislike stopping for more than a few seconds in my HAV. |

Make the tank you squads defend objective helps infantry stay near,+ bonus sp and av people are less likely to spam next to a tank when surrounding by assault rifles and smgs |
