I got bored one day, and realized how few other tankers there are so I typed this up so everyone can join in the entry curve(since people seem to think it's idiotically expensive to start off.) It's segmented into two parts from being too long to fit into a single post, here is the fitting guide.
DUST 514 tank fitting tips:
Resists + Repper equals Reliability!(RRR)
In my experience with tanks in DUST, resists are the MOST important part of the tank. If you're going to invest in any advanced tanks like Gunnlogi or Madraugers, even the tanks past them too, make sure you have at least two resist modules and a repper. Preferably all of those being meta modules rather than just basic, trust me it will save your behind and the 200k hull of the tank itself is worth stacking it up to 300-400k to make sure you won't lose it.
Buffer is less important but still important, while if you're trying to be a tanker you should put your SP into resist modules before turret modules this is still unavoidable. Fit two resist modules, a repper and then use whatever CPU/PG you have left over to fit an armor plate. You may find yourself at the mercy of a single power grid upgrade in the case of the Madrauger to buffer yourself out with a 180mm plate, but don't worry about that if you have two meta resist modules. Whereas with the Gunnlogi you'll want to pimp out with power modules, preferably diagnostics so you get a bit of bonus tank, and vomit out resists and buffer with your high slots. This is the only tank where I would say don't use an active scanner.
A basic fit I find works for the Soma: Highs: Militia active scanner Militia damage control Meds: Militia 80gj blaster Militia 20gj blaster 20gj blaster Lows: Militia armor repairer Militia energized nano membrane Militia energized nano membrane Militia 60mm armor plates
This weighs in around 180k per tank, enough that you can launch it in a skirmish match and not go ISK deficient which is what makes it great for newer players. It's fairly light on fitting skills, but as you get those up you'll be wiggling your way into bigger tougher fits. Make sure you keep and save this fit alone, it can be a cheap way to turn the tide of a fight while you have some more expensive fits that use tech 1 modules and maybe even standard rather than militia turrets. Also note that it requires small hybrid turret operation at level 1.
A basic fit for the Sica: Highs: Militia Sheld Extender Militia Shield Resistance Amplifier Militia Heavy Shield Booster Meds: Militia 20gj blaster Militia 20gj blaster Militia 80gj blaster Lows: Militia power diagnostic system Militia Powergrid Expansion Unit
This weighs in at a heftier 200k isk/u, and in my opinion is worse than the Soma for the starting tank driver both from the increased cost and decreased reliability. But nonetheless for someone wanting to get into a Gunnlogi over a Madrauger it's a good start.
Turrets all go to personal preference, I prefer blasters(And you should too, these things pack a punch at short to medium range and you will mainly be up against infantry so it's the primary choice) but railguns provide incredible long range support for infantry if you can aim it, taking out other tanks and stationary turrets from a safe area. They are however marginally less effective up close, being unable to track infantry moving quickly and having a tough time hitting them.
The turrets I suggest for specific situations are the standard 80gj for a swiss army knife, scattered for fighting infantry en-masse from its low heat generation and high fire rate, and compressed for fighting a mix of both but being more suited to mid range support of infantry advances with high damage and moderate fire rate but fast heat generation.
TURRET UPGRADES: These are fairly pointless IMO, but you can make good use of them. I don't have a huge amount of experience with them but can tell you that a tracking computer makes it easier to whip around and hit more infantry, I'd prefer to put a scanner in myself so I typically discard these. |
