I like Iron Wolf Saber's ideas for a overhaul of the dropsuits, but they could use to be changed rather quickly, and I have an idea...
In EVE, t2 ships not only have extra bonuses, but they are usually better at something than a t1 counterpart. It makes no sense that I have to train all the way up to using a proto-level basic medium frame in order to use my Sever bpo.
Yeah. I know... HTFU your aurum crap is useless now that you have to have to invest more and it isn't something you want to play with, and I understand that a certain kind of inflation is needed so that older players aren't too forbidding to allow for new players, but...
This is a lose-lose-lose situation for new and old players, as well as the devs.
Here is what I suggest:
Make the light prerequisite level match that of the 'specialized' dropsuit (Scout//Assault/Logistics). The advanced Gallente dropsuit would require [X] Light Dropsuits level 3 instead of 5. Compensate for it instead by requiring a skill that same level or higher to match its intended role, e.g. the Gallente scout would require Range Amplification.
To summarize:
Currently- The Gallente Scout G-I requires G. Light Dropsuits V and G. Scout Dropsuits I. The Gallente Scout G/1 requires G. Light Dropsuits V and G. Scout Dropsuits III.
Proposed- The Gallente Scout G-I requires G. Light Dropsuits I, G. Scout Dropsuits I, and Range Amplification I. The Gallente Scout G/1 requires G. Light Dropsuits III, G. Scout Dropsuits III, and Range Amplification III.
It would allow older players to use a greater variety of fittings to their satisfaction. It would allow new players to pick a niche gameplay style more quickly and easily, and both remain entertained and get reasonably adept at it in the time it takes to earn the isk or sp for the next thing they're interested in doing. It would also give new players some guidance as to the use of certain dropsuits, and force older players to train skills they should probably have anyway, without requiring that they necessarily use those modules or equipment. Required skills could vary within a race, as in having the basic Gallente scout require basic scan range extenders and the advanced Gallente scout require advanced profile dampeners.
If this is done, the game becomes fairer to older players and better for new players. For the game designers, this creates more room to add new kinds of dropsuits in the future, as in EVE where there is, say, more than one kind of t2 battlecruiser, thereby bringing the game more in line with EVE, and contributing to "seeding the universe."
This would be a win-win-win.
