Is the levelling system in this game a big Ponzi scheme? In EVE it certainly is, and that seems to work well for the rocket-jockeys in space but I'm not so sure if it translates well for dedicated FPS players.
I signed up very early in the beta, I've dipped in and out of the game a few times since then but I was lucky in that all my passive SP has been accruing in the background. When I returned to uprising I had 3,000,000 SP in the bank to play with. With some judicial skill choices (learned my lessons in EVE) I've got a character that is on the lower side of the "competitive" scale. I have a logi fit (takes a ton of SP to play basic logistics but that's another argument), a mid-level AR and some other basic weapons, I'm a long way from proto anything.
With where I am now I feel like I can hold my own in most pub matches. I'm a happy little camper. My concern is for new people. How long will it take to get to where I am from scratch? In other FPS games that the target market are coming from (BF3, MAG, etc etc), levelling to a point where you could participate competitively could be achieved in less than a week if you knew what you were doing. Will the new waves of players have the patience to get stomped by proto gear for 1 month? 2 months? Keep in mind that grinding til you reach SP cap every day is not an option for most people with jobs/families in the real world. |

It's a valid question because the answer has to be a resounding NO.

OP, lend me about 3 million of your SP. Then, I will spread it out between three of my alts. They will in turn grind out more of the SP. In about a month, I will double your investment by transferring those alts to your account.
If you tell your friends and they join, I can guarantee to shorten that return to 2 weeks.
Let me know, but this offer is only good for the next 4 hours. Too many other players have already asked, but there is something about the title of this thread that makes me want to give you first crack at this deal.
Also, don't tell CCP... they are ponzi schemers |

I have done some new character tests and the numbers that produce a reasonable place to start are 1M SP/ISK. Less if they would reintroduce a militia Logi Bro suit that has two equip slots.
A New Berry can not specialize and have anything worth using for a month, maybe more. I don't really care how one defines it that is just pure grinding. And it is happening right out of the box. Day one, battle one and repeat for week after week.
Doing good with Militia gear is great if you can do it. But what is the point? The game is professed to be MMO/FPS/RPG and yet it violates many of the basic elements of good RPG design. New players need to be engaged, given rewards early and relatively often to keep them engaged. As they expand their skills everything can level up, dramatically in some cases.
FPS games are about shooting some guy in the face. Games that are about discovery, terror, horror and fighting against terrible odds have used equipment shortage to enhance game play. DUST just made ammo scarce. In an FPS. Now you cannot shot the guy in the face in a shoot the guy in the face game.
DUST is not like those games. Fine.
But it isn't fun either. Not fine at all.
* OP, Ponzi schemes are based on getting many to donate with expectation of high returns and using the new resources coming in to fund the payout of earlier investors. They will eventually collapse. CCP is focused on faucets and sink of SP and ISK. Different things entirely. |
