So I just wanted to hear some of the arguments on which makes one better than the other. I will start with what I feel is better and why. I prefer shields/shield tanking. I play both Eve and Dust and prefer shields in both games. As a merc, I only get two lines of defense, I prefer that the first holds up. I like to be light on my feet, and I also love the fact that shield regen on their own. I my corp I play with a few people that prefer armor/armor tanking. I still don't understand why anyone would want to do that. I personally have never tried it as it made more sense to me to not get that close to the end and struggle to keep it up. Don't get me wrong I do feel it is necessary to have as much armor as possible, but I do not prefer to have more armor than shields or to be slowed downed in the process. So what I want to know is what you prefer and why? |

Armor Tanking for the win.
#1 You can still train shields skills and have decent shield recharge times without any mods. #2 Armor mods use low slots so you still have high slots for damage mods, and even extra shield mods which I have tried before. #3 We have the option to passive or active tank based on who we choose to play with. Having dedicated corp mates is a requirement in this.
Thats my 3 main reasons for going armor tanking |

I like armor tanking because there are a TON of ways people bring down your shields, and very quickly to boot. Whereas armor tanking, you get that extra precious second to get away |

Why I went Shield Tanking:
1. I am a Caldari. A Caldari without Shields is like a Minmatar without duct tape. 2. I am a Caldari. A Caldari without Shields is on better than a dirty, planet burning Gallente. 3. I am a Caldari. I am really used to EMP bending me over a barrel and spanking me. |

Shields for me, For pretty much the same reason as the OP, I like the buffer on the outside... If you're good enough of a player or smart, you should be able to get cover before your shields are gone and if you specced properly into shields it should take no longer than 1-8 seconds to be fully recharged depending on how much damage you took and mod setup.
I've been tooling with the mods to see how effective they are and I'm pretty impressed.. I ran a suit the other day with a setup for testing.... caldari ck 3 extenders and a recharge on the hi's and 3 regulators on the lows.. The shield started the charge in under a second after being damaged. It was funny getting shields halfway down ducking for cover for a sec or two and hopping back out to finish the job with full shields again while my enemy wasn't even starting his recharge yet.
I can't speak for tanks as I don't use them. |

Like Dazereth said, one flux and you're almost royally screwed, and like Zephlaw said on #2, you can fit more DPS and even MORE tanking. But I'd like to add and point out that personally, I think armor tanking is better when you're in the thick of things; shields have a delay before they recharge, meaning you have to take no damage and wait for the shields to come back up. If you're an active armor tanker, then you don't have to wait since your reppers are already healing you up, and if your shield happens to come back [might I add, without the need of a module], it serves as a nice buffer before you start getting hit again. I'd like to also note that just because your armor tank doesn't mean you're slower...in EVE I actually outrun most of my shield tanking fleet mates, and in DUST I can easily keep up with the shielders.
Also, everyone and their mothers proclaim shield tanking is the best, so some [like me, partially] do it merely to break off from the norm. |

I prefer armor tanking for the fact that armor can't be dropped one shot with a flux nade or a tactical orbital. Also armor tanking feels better for support roles as I can have more health overall as well as faster passive hp repair ( dont have to wait for shield recharge delay)
Also since I am a gallente logibro I have a nice passive HP rep speed already (5 HP/s at lvl 5)
The Flux nade thing is the biggest thing to me for not going towards shields, one grenade that only takes a total of 24k sp to get to level one after prerequisites. That can drop any suits shields in one blast is a fear to be reckoned with. |
