Is it a title you give yourself or one that others give you? cause i keep seeing it being thrown on here like a super cool boy scout badge,is it the money you've spent on Aurum or more of the time you've but into the game(god forbid forum activity)? |

im not sure what a vet is... i was playing when it was still closed beta and i still use only advanced suits or militia suits... so only like 4mil sp is actually put to use... some people consider vet as proto. i consider vet as being able to adapt to any changes CCP makes. us EVE pilots have been doing it for years. why cant the dusties? |

adapting is one thing relearning mechanics from scratch is totaly different ... i was a g.o.w beta tester for 2 and 3 and the beta to finished product mechanicaly was damn near identical (gears of war technicaly is a distant cousin to this game to those who dont know ) they didnt change that much in the first few patches of that game not as much as dust has thrown at us the hammer burst felt like a hammer burst the lancer felt like a lancer from beta to release they did tweak the spread of the gnasher and the dps but that was needed , dust ccp took too drastic of nerfing and took a little too far in the skill rebuild as in it wasnt broke there was no need to fix just add to it .. my personal opinion |

anyways. if you like i said. if you play eve for some amount of time (or for mr. serious, do your time in the military) then you will learn that there is always a vet. there was always someone before you with more experience. so a "vet" is a dynamic thing based on perspective. i am a vet to some but i dont consider myself one because alpha testers are vets to me... |

Actually, the correct definition of the word doesn't restrict its use to military applications, and it's perfectly valid to call someone with a significant amount of experience in any specific environment where others have much less experience a veteran.
You can be a veteran veterinarian when you've been working with animals for 30 years. |

As stated previously and within the context of this game:
Vet = typically someone from the closed beta days of this game who have witnessed/played each new patch.
Over time, quite a few have developed a considerable sense of entitlement with this game, claiming that it should be a certain way. I'm not excluding myself from this, but I don't consider myself to be as extreme as others. My old character is "The Polish Hammer", but I shortened it because I thought the "The" was silly. |

If this is true, my qualification would be +£bervet. The amount of hardfreezes I encountered is staggering :p I've been playing since around end of February, the beginning of March last year.
I have to say the game has come a long way, but I still miss a few things from the old days. I really really liked the old Skirmish mode and small + medium installations. I miss those tiny anti-infantry blasters ^^
Those medium guns were only slightly less powerful than current day larges though. Or the tanks were really bad, since they were free anyway :p |

A 'vet' reflects your time served.
A 'war vet' defines an individuals length of service in the armed forces.
A 'dust vet' defines an individuals length of service playing dust.

A vet is someone who has had a large amount of experience beta testing Dust and has been here through several builds. For example, I've been in Dust since last August. I've been through several builds and have been playing about 7-14 hours a day almost daily (I have no life really), so I'm and old vet though there are still plenty who were vet's before I got here.
As for achieving Vet status, I would say that once you've actively played for 2 full builds and begun your third build, I'd say you've reached it.
As for what defines us, we keep playing no matter how bad things get. Dirty summed it up well:

buy a subscription first. EVE is not something you can jump into that easily so just be aware that if you want to do pvp and kill players. you will die, a lot, a lot lot.
i suggest joining a corporation focused on teaching. like eve university or others.
once you get the hang of how things work. you will most likely know what you want to do in eve. then you just have to figure out the most efficient way to make isk. then once you start making isk. you can start paying for your account through isk rather than subscription. this will usually take about 3 months or more to make enough to start paying for your account with isk unless you are a very fast learner.
also dont get ahead of yourself, know that it takes months to master each class of ships. you start with frigates, get comfortable in frigates and destroyers because you will be too underskilled for anything else for atleast 2-3 months, dont even try or you will just throw all your isk away. its comparable to getting a proto suit and having only militia fittings on it. get good fittings in a cheap suit/ship and you will be surprised what you can do with a "noob ship/suit"
this is just a brief explanation lol
