I read that there are like 80 millons PS3 sold around the world. I know, there are a lot of regions (like Sudamerica) where they have not PS store, and where buy with dollars is not easy. However I'm sure there are millons of consoles in contruies that have problems with the dollar, and there are millons of consoles where A FREE TO PLAY GAME IS SOMETHING MORE THAN AMAZING FOR A GAMER THAT CAN'T PAY FOR ANY GAME THAT COME TO THE MARKET, and of course, there are a lot of games that don't come to places like this, and without a PS Store you just can't get them.
That's why a "Free to play" game is a big THANK YOU from the people that like playing. Knowing this, you can expect that at least 50% of those guys that are in countries with dollar problems and without PS Store, will play the game with the account that they created using a USA Hotel addres.
Try to imagine the numbers and then addition the rest of the world.
I thought that an update with this "dimensions" was something very important. And I say very important because I read a lot of times the word "RELEASE". I play the new build this days and I could see that there were not more than 5 000 players. None of this days I could see more than 5 000 players. And after think about all the PS3 sold around the world, and how a "Free to play" game will be get it by practically ALL THE WORLD, you can see that 5 000 players is NOTHING.
I know is not beautiful to think in numbers most of the time. But just try to think about it a second. 80 millons of PS3 around the world, at least 5 millons in "poor regions" where gamers are desesperate for getting new games. And I could see just 5 000 players in the "RELEASE update".
And I just want to say something else that I think is important to notice: sometimes, when you play a game, you don't care about if it has some bugs, or if is not "good enough" because IT'S FREE TO PLAY. I mean, when you have a FREE TO PLAY game, you just like it, because it's FREE TO PLAY, you just win a lot of positive points because IT'S FREE.
And even this you just had 5 000 players after the new "big update". I don't know what are the objetives of this game. Maybe is just a "complement" of EVE (game which I can't particullary pay for) and you work on Dust, thinking more in EVE than in DUST "per se". I don't know. I don't make games, I'm just a Bioengineering student who love games. I like the game, I "very like" the game. But I feel that you lose more than you win when you make an update. I think you lose more and more players when you make an update and I need to tell you CCP, that's not ok, because you make and update to "strengthen" the game, to make it better. But if it's better, why do you keep losing players?
CCP, you just delete an entire game and you make an update that is a complete different game and that sucks. It looks like you don't have a "work line" and players pay for it when they need to adapt to all the changes that you make with each update.
I play since the start of the closed beta. YOU COULDN'T PRESERVE PRACTICALLY ANYTHING IN ALL THIS TIME and I don't know why. I would love to know but at this point, it doesn't look useful. You just make me think that your "Development team" is not qualified and good enough to make the game by them self and you just need to read at the forums to know "what can we do next". Or maybe you just work, listening to the CPM (I even don't know what is that supose to mean), or maybe you just don't care about this game like you care about EVE (which is cool too, because you need to suscriber and this is a business too). I don't know.
But let me tell you with all respect that I think this is not the way at all. AND I DON'T KNOW WHAT'S THE WAY to make the game better. I will keep playing the game because I like the "game idea" and like I said it's free to play. But numbers talk by them self and I don't think that you can keep the game working just with me and 99 more players.
I hope you can get what you want while players can play what they like.
Sorry for the english and all the text. See you.
PS: I'm from Argentina.

Very few people have heard of Dust even in the FPS community. It has not been advertised, there's little word-of-mouth since it is still in beta, and it's still in beta.
CCP is committing to a multi-year project, and making yet another of these doom-and-gloom posts doesn't serve anyone's interests. Numbers will improve as CCP gets the gunplay right and fixes the most glaring gameplay issues in a build or two (!). |

Sorry, I don't know what "doom-and-gloom" means and you're right, numbers will improve if CCP make the things right. I think I'm not the only that see the game going to the opposite side.
And let me tell you something about "there's little word-of-mouth SINCE IT STILL IN BETA; AND IT'S STILL IN BETA". When the Starhawk open beta came to the PS Store, even here, in Argentina, a country where we have PS Store since the past month (April 2013), a TV show talked about it. |

CCP will have to improve upon the game in any way they need to, if they want their multi-year project to work out.
I won't be calling Dust a 'dead game' though, not until CCP themselves 'pull the plug'. My reasoning for this is that I have good faith that it will become greater than what it is today. It just needs its developers to keep supporting it, and its players to keep the developers from forgetting or ignoring its faults.
Why do you think I still play the blasted game, other than to fullfill my obligations as a corp member? Good faith in Dust's future, folks! :D |
