Is my current TV going to be able to run 1080p using a 1080i setup, or should I just kill myself now? Is there really any difference between the two?
First off, the patch notes say an increase in resolution. They do not say 1080p.
The general consensus is that the video feed will still be 720p, but that resolutions on textures/rendering planes etc will be improved.
As I understand it the PS3 won't run games in native 1080p, that they're all upscaled. I don't know though.
As to your question, yes there's a big difference between 1080p and 1080i. In most cases, you're better off running 720p than 1080i. 1080i means 1080 rows, but they're interlaced. This means that your video output is actually 540 rows every other frame. They are then run interlaced to give the full 1080 resolution. In doing this though, you will probably see some flickering, and your frame rate might not be as good.
The p in 1080p or 720p means progressive, and this means the entire resolution is rendered each frame. |

Was this meant to be English? If so, you fail at it. I don't have time to waste trying to decipher your blather. |

Ok, so I did waste my time to decipher your blather.
Here's what I found :

Also, I found metal gear solid 4,which is what I assume your list of letters actually refers to. Yeah, bzzt, not only do you fail at English, you fail at knowledge because MGS4 runs at 1024x768 Which is less than 38% of 1080p.
