Currently the explosions in dust are more than a bit lacking. Yes, they make a loud boom and yes they make things die but they don't really respond to the terrain around them appropriately.
Explosions should be channeled by narrow confines or extremely durable substances forcing their blasts to extend farther away from the non-destructable surfaces. To simulate this all explosions should take up a certain volume rather than just a radius. If an explosion happens in a narrowly confined space the space's boundaries (ie walls, ceiling, etc) will restrict the explosion in certain directions, but the explosion will continue to expland until it reaches its maximum volume.
A great way to handle this programming wise would be to have the game treat the explosion like a very rapidly spreading liquid that will fill "x" volume of space. This new system for dealing with explosive damage would allow for a mass driver to be an effective room/hallway clearing device while also increasing the risk to the user. Notice how this is both a benefit and a drawback at the same time, it would still retain balance while providing a small increase to functionality. If CCP wants to get really tricky with the programming they could have the explosions move around rounded corners more easily (thus allowing explosions to travel farther down a smoothly turning channel) than sharp angular corners.

you do know that liquidcalculations are among the hardest to simulate...
that would put too much workload on the servers and IMO fluid gameplay > minor enhancments |

Oh I totally agree that it is a minor improvement. It is simply one that I would like to see since it would bring interesting changes to the way players react to and utilize explosive devices. |
