Say you are in a 1vs1, and no one else is to interfere. You are in a medium ranged fight both with AR's. You are using hip-fire/crosshairs. What would be more beneficial for you at THAT TIME?
Auto Aim on vs Auto Aim off.
And why? |

And why? don't know... most teams group up so much though that SOMEONE is going to interfere, (unless its a redline and it's one guy responding to a sneak) in that case still don't know. Though if it is really medium range and hipfire only 1 in 10 rounds are likely to hit. |

No such thing as auto aim that I have seen.
There is an aim assist option, but all it does is turn the blue aim dot (or the reticule if you are running a forge gun etc) to red when the target is in range and the sights are very close to on target. Doesn't work with the iron sights though and doesn't always mean you will get a hit.
I have heard people say that it moves their cross hairs if there's players in the sight, but I've never experienced that and think it's nonsense. |

According to a Fanfest video there is a host of systems that comprise what we call "Aim Assist".
That includes "friction" which slows down your reticule as you pass over a target and "sticky" that causes you to turn to keep your target centered as it moves. There were a few other things mentioned as well.
The upshot was that all systems were being tuned and would work far better than they do now. |

It is there. CCP even talked about it some at fanfest, or it may have been in one of the pre-fan fest videocasts.
Anyway, they use a recipe for aim assist that has a lot of ingredients. The mix is not quite right. One of ingredients is a 'following' thing so if a target moves in from of your reticle the reticle will follow the target.
You can test this if you can find a quiet corner of the map and have some members of the other team run back in forth in front of your reticle while your hands are not even touching the controller. It will still move slightly to follow them.
This is bad because when you fight against groups of enemies, the auto aim part of aim assist can't determine your intended target. How does it pick the enemy you want to shoot out of a group to follow if they are all moving back and forth as you are targeting?
This should be taken out.
It almost needs to be adjusted on a weapon by weapon basis. If you add more "magnetism" for something like an Gallente blaster assault rifle or Amarr scrambler rifle you could end up making sniping super easy and could also mess up something like aiming with a flaylock pistol where you want to lead your target and you would always be fighting the magnetism to keep your reticle in front of the target.
