I'm confused, I'm a guy and I like girls but lately..... ok not that kind of confused lol.
What makes things "OP"? (my 1st post on the forums but I did read through them a while before signing on) I see people saying this and that thing is OP but how so?
Is it the fact that players have x named weapon appear when they kill you? Because from my perspective the person has invested gameplay/time training up the required skills to use said weapon proficiently so do I call that OP? No they've earned the right to use whatever they use so I respawn and get back out there thinking what can I train/do to maybe do something about it.
That pretty much covers the broad spectrum of things without picking stuff specifically so I'll just open it up a bit for disscusion;
Snipers, is it OP that someone that has trained up to snipe well so can kill me without me knowing about it untill I'm lay on the ground? No, I'll just take note of the shot indicator and look at the map before respawning to see if I can do anything about it. Again not the players fault if when I try to counter snipe my hits don't register because of terrain issues, they can't help that it's just one of those things that need a fix which I think is being improved on the 6th? so nothing I to do but move on.
Sharpshooter skill, I've noticed alot of talk about. Player A and player B come across each other player A has some sharpshooter player B does not, A trained for it so why is that OP? B should look into training it or just use cover to get closer if they can. I know there are open areas but that's the risk you take.
I know there are things that possibly could do with tweaking but I still believe that if someone has invested the time into training up for certain weapons or skills I'm not going to sit shouting OP at my screen just because I don't so is OP just a matter of opinion?
A little backstory about me just so you can get an idea of where I am coming from, My character to date has been around for 1 month and 6 days, I have with this triple SP deal 3.3million SP. (Also big thanks to CCP for that! and to the people complaining, oh CCP mislead us they didn't give us this or that, you got/are getting a boat load of extra SP for doing what you were going to do anyway so hush up and be grateful maybe) Now I did have a slight advantage because I bought the Starter and Mercenary pack to have some goodies to play about with but didn't realise you had to actually activate the booster untill some time after lol (derp), mainly just used the Aurum for militia BPO's though, I'm not a hardcore FPS player I just play for fun so started off as a Logi trying to help my team and picked up the shooting side as time went along, still not great but I do ok sometimes (K/D really doesn't interest me but it is nice when you see you have more K than D lol). I also didn't just load up the game and jump straight into battle I read through the skills available, looked at the items and watched some youtube videos to have some knoledge of the gameplay beforehand (is that OP too?) didn't do great think I did ok but stuck at it anyway. I'd also like to thank lowratehitman, Dust Fiend and CEOPyrex for making such videos available, cheers guys! and if anyone would like to link me some more to watch feel free to do so. I'm still in the starter corp and don't have a mic at the moment so tend not to join squads and run round somewhat like a chicken although I'd like to think not a headless one, I try and help anyone I see if playing Logi but I also use the suit for other stuff too so sorry if you see me come past as a Logi suit and I didn't fix you up.
Anything I may even slightly consider OP or a better way of saying it maybe more advantageous I feel can be overcome by knowledge, field awareness, common sense, team work and a chilled out attitude. Possibly running in and taking your chances like a crazy person too xD
So what is OP please?
Apologies if I offended anyone (aside from the ones moaning about tripple sp) or don't grasp the situation properly as a relatively new player. Thanks in advance also to any helpful responses, I would also ask that there be no flaming of peoples opinions but this is the internet...
I realise changes are coming but would still like to know anyway :)
After thought and I guess this bit is more of a sugestion but since it's in the same kind of category. Keeping new players from getting "pubstomped" (is that right?) by the "OP" stuff, simply have a seperate que for characters that are x days old or have x amount of SP to play and learn but optional to join so nothing is taken away if they choose to join the main games. Didn't really bother me starting out but I've seen talk about it. |

A weapon is OP when, in its element and against another weapon in its own element, all other things equal, it guarantees victory to its owner.
This is a highly subjective and poorly understood field in which there are many opinions and few experts.
OP weapon threads tend to be invitations to rage and QQ. That's all you need to know. |

Firstly, I'll admit I'm impressed that you haven't degraded into bouts of bitterness and tear-shedding after earning 3.3million SP without a mic and a corporation. That takes some kind of self-control.
Secondly, I'd like to point out that this is an FPS.
Which leads me to the next point: that not all players will rationalise like you have done above. Console games are meant to grasp you by the scruff of the neck, immerse you completely in the gameplay for a few days to a few months, then allow you to resurface back into reality, awestruck and dumbfounded, and feeling as if you've aged a few years and become more wise to the ways in the world, when truly, you've simply spent the last few months drinking too much coffee.
DUST is different, and we are experiencing, as gamers and critics, a little of what many like to call "tall poppy syndrome". We cut down the difference, bring it down to size, to what we can fit in neatly with everything else. We despise innovation.
CoD demonstrates this spite incredibly well. In fact, one such character by the name of General Shepherd in the campaign of the CoD: MW2 game, summarises the future of CoD: "the more things change, the more they stay the same".
Better graphics, better guns, better scopes, more camo, more achievements, but underneath? The same beast.
CCP is here to change the game, and we don't like it.

There-¦s a big Rock - Paper - Scisor game going on, and when something breaks this balance, it is considered OP.
However, since most people are too stupid to play only rock every time, they complain that paper is overpowered.. The the devs nerf paper while making it strong against scisors, then people complain that scisors are underpowerd and need a buff, then they keep making changes until you have paper+rock beating scisors, rock and scisors beating paper, scisors not doing anything, and people abandoning the game because this is nothing like Rock - Paper - Scisors anymore. |

Demonstrating that a game element is OP relies on having some degree of familiarity with what constitutes balance. If this question is not rhetorical I suggest you look into transitive games. I think what many people mean by OP can mostly be described as strategic dominance. |

Short of a serious imbalance I don't care if something is over powered.
If something isn't working you have to adapt or die. We're basically immortal and all people can do is whine and cry that they played a few games that didn't make them enough money because they are losing their proto gear.

99% of OP posts are essentially Rage Posts.
Merc A just got Butt Hurt (tm) by Weapon (Insert Random Number Here). This was the Final Straw (tm)! The fact that the shot that took down all their shields and most of their armor was done just thirty milliseconds earlier is not announced but that Kitten OPed Weapon just did them in One Too Many Times (tm). Then we get Posts regarding OP.
Or Merc A through D were in a Squad, playing Ambush on Manus Peak, got caught in the bowl by A and ripped to pieces by Weapon X. Obviously they all agree the game would be better if Weapon X was Removed From The Game (tm). At least one of them will post that.
The final one is because Merc Z has developed The Perfect Fitting for DUST. Except they just got killed by someone who happens to be very, very good with a standard or worse yet ... Militia spec weapon. And in their Perfect Fitting no less. So obviously BPOs need to be removed, that particular weapon (usually the AR) is OP and the entire Skill Tree that turned that junk weapon into the perfect killing machine must be eliminated.
They also want CCP to drop doing everything except fixing the obvious atrocity that was unleashed upon them. Plus, they want their AUR, ISK and pride back. Don't forget the Officer weapon they lost.
Add to the above the latest bug (-ish, sort of, maybe) where the Kill Feed is not always accurately describing what weapon actually killed them and the OP posts should be even funnier until May 6th.
When the new build is released an entirely different set of OP posts will be foisted on these same Forums as the entire OP craziness will start all over again. Let the Butt Hurt Wars begin. Again. |

WIth the right skill training and use of stimulants, melee hits harder than Nova Knives, doesn't need a charge time, and can be used while you have a ranged weapon equipped.
Also, nothing in DUST is as OP as this guy. |

Something is OP when the skill in use is nonexistant compared to the efficacy granted by raw SP. Things like the swarm launcher dumbfire, the RE football grenades, the instant OBs... it does tend to be things with high alpha that are OP because there are no counters besides "don't get aimed at". |

If the only counters to something are unreasonable to ask of the player, then it's definitely something that should be looked at for balancing purposes. It boils down to subjective opinion on what's "unreasonable." As Noc said "don't get aimed at" is pretty unreasonable, and a number of us have at one point argued that "don't stop moving for the entirety of the match" is unreasonable as the counter to OBs while others disagreed. |

Most of the time people crying OP are doing just that, crying, because some weapon killed them. Occasionally, they're attempting to address an actual perceived imbalance, as was once the case with missiles (which CCP then addressed by making them practically worthless -- which is where we are today with them).
As we are in beta it's important to look for game breaking issues and imbalanced aspects of the game and bring them to CCP's attention. Unfortunately it's starting to feel like a perpetual beta, but that's a whole different story (perhaps one that will begin to conclude on May 6th). |

Thanks all for a good variety of responses, I've got a better understanding of it now for when something is truely OP and when the term is used loosely just for a rant. I guess since I don't play to many FPS games or alot of games in general online I couldn't see it from that point of view. Only found out Dust was in open beta from when I started playing and hadn't touched my PS3 in years until then. Hope to see you guys on the field and either res/repair and restock you or attempt to kill you whichever be the case |

Don't get aimed at is a valid suggestion. It's combat. Someone pulls the trigger while aiming at your head, you die. It's going to happen sometimes. Or, someone will have better control over aiming and land more hits.
It happens. It will happen no matter what -- even if we all used the same suit, weapon and skills. Somebody is going to win! |
