Watching the Q&A portion of the 'Advancing the Core' panel on the Fanfest stream, someone asked the devs about orbital strikes being a "win more" feature (my words, I don't recall his phrasing). The guy asking the question seemed to think this was bad design. I suppose that my initial, visceral reaction as well, but I've come to think of it as really elegant design.
When my team is getting pubstomped, I'm generally not having fun, and just want the match to end. The game-ending orbitals in those cases are both cool fireworks for the pubstompers, and euthanasia for the pubstompees. When you know you haven't a prayer of winning, why not just get it over with?
I'm fine with the orbital's role in more balanced matches, too...the stakes ramp up as the game draws near the end, which seems to be a common element in a lot of good game design...but I'm more interested in what others' opinions are on the orbital in unbalanced matches. |

I just hope that the free precision strike gets removed from corp / PC matches at some point, you should have to have an eve pilot in orbit if you want an orbital. |

Mercy Orbitals. Who wouldn't want to wipe the field of that 16 man murder squad when its 75 clones to 10?
The butthurt would be epic.
but tbh, mercy orbitals would be meh, but funny. |

I think that's just the way it is in EVE.. Having a mob of friends in ships is always going to win you more than having just two guys.
In the same way, having a 17th man in space is going to help you in battle.. It's just life in New Eden. |

It is obnoxious and unfair, but I certainly can't think of a better way to distribute them.
I do like the idea of removing the NPC strikes outside of pub matches, though. |

Its fine
The problem is matchmaking so its always 1 side with a massively stacked team which gains all the OB and redlines the enemy
Anyone with half a brain can work it out except for that guy |

It kills the game. There is no counter, and getting one too is not balance, just parity. |

I'd go with its possibly unfair in pub matches where the scores aren't even close. I think they work much better in close games. Assuming PC/Corp battles, if the match is close both teams should be receiving them at around the same time meaning that how effectively you use them is important and adds another important decision to make during the battle. Here they feel like a reward and using them correctly is important. The balance of them is very much like DOTA 2 balance. You each have something incredibly broken, and how you utilize that decides who comes out ahead.
The place where they become a bit bogus is when the game isn't close. That said, I also don't think they really matter at that point. If Corp A is beating Corp B so badly that they have an orbital strike in one third of the time of Corp B, chances are the match is over anyways and the strike was just gratuitous violence.Don't get me wrong, I'm sure come backs can happen and getting struck down by the hand of god just as you're trying to mount a counter offensive is brutal, but I still don't think its an insurmountable advantage.
I'm sure there are some tweaks that could be made to improve orbitals, but I don't really see them as truly unfair.

I think orbitals are fine.
Not too long ago I was playing with two corporates plus a random (a rather good random with a mic, props to him) on ambush and we were losing 12-13 clones remaining, and the other team had a Madrugar trying to chew us down the whole game. However, we managed an orbital, I called it in on the HAV (which was also where almost their entire team was) and the score quickly changed to 12-2 plus a destroyed HAV on the enemy team.
Sure this may not happen too often but it feels really rewarding for those of us who play smart against all odds. |

Because that goes really well with the ideal that each game should be able to function independently and that DUST players should be encouraged to work with EVE players rather than being forced to rely on them. |
