For nearly 2 weeks now, the predominantly unoccupied territory of the Chesiette System has been under continuous conflict between Mercs hired by agents of either the Askron Agency of the Amarr or the Federal Defense Network of the Gallente Federation. The news became more pronounced as intensification of the fighting reached a peak this past weekend, as large numbers of big-name Corporations began their deployment.
Currently Mercs are working at-hire, meaning they work for whoever they can obtain a contract from. But events like this suggest that to an extent certain corporations may be preparing for factional sides, and inevitably a full-time contract with an open military organization. Amarr Imperial Chancellor Gregory Nulcudai expressed his thoughts on the matter in a public address to the citizens of Myyhera III:
Gregory Nulcudai wrote:It is important that we understand just what it is we face. We face the reality of Mercenary corporations on the rise separate and outside the containment of our own Imperial control. As such we must recognize the facet of development which is thus presented.
The Amarr Empire hereby asks for Mercenary Corporations to defend the Imperial territories from encroachment. Payment will be heavy, but the danger will be heavier. What does fighting for the Amarr represent? Fighting for tradition. For Order. For the glory of the Empire.
After the statement was made, Gallente forces were seen dropping hired mercenaries on the nearby celestial of Myyhera VIII, an Amarr Chemical Weapons factory and central production facility for various Amarr defensive networks. No comment was put forth by either Amarr or Gallente forces about the matter, but we can assume that the tension is over the territory itself. While Myyhera VIII is mostly a chemical planet, it is also a major cloning facility and bounty hunter rest and repair stop. Control of such a planet would give the Federation direct links to the assets of the Amarr, and thus weaken the Amarr's overall defensive abilities.
Still today, Mercs continue to fight on both Myyhera VIII, as well as Chesiette V. |
