I have been leveling my skill in dropships for many months now to be able to use the prometheus, and when i finally was able to, the enemy team just kept locking on to me and since the dropships have very low health, i died within two rocket hits. Do you guys think that the dropships in the game are underpowered??

 find the right gunners.

sure they are fragile, and sure your going to lose alot of dropships

they arnt invincable and WILL be shot down. but if you have some friends who you cant count on to gun for you it will get easyer.

gunners will spot for you, tell you when they see forge gunners and swarmers. tell you to get out of dodge before you knew you were in danger.

I belong to such a team and we've taken out proto tanks, and obtained 5 orbitals with just the three of us in a single game (not common but getting 2 or 3 from just our squad is very common). so it IS possible.

Hang in there it gets better and becomes a very very valuable asset for your team.

I've seen a few well tanked Grims that shrugged off shot after shot from my Assault Forge. Bloody annoying trying to take them suckers down .

What he said. It is very fun to float above a tank and kill it. Also have the pilot be the squad leader and set defend mark on the DS. You'll have WP bouncing around that DS.

Actually I think dropships are well balanced based on the current skills. That's because there are many skills involved and their bonuses stack very well. The issue of getting one-hit-killed by a railgun tank across the map is still a concern, but other than that everything's pretty ok.

If CCP attempted to give the dropships a buff with their usually clumsy tweaking the DS would be well overpowered, I assume.

I'm looking forward to how dropships will work in the next update with the new skill-tree.

It seems to me it's about sacrifice. You have to give up some slots to tank a little or add reps but that makes a big difference if you can fly. Personally, I can't wait for the upcoming assault dropships with a front mounted, pilot controlled turret! There's a link somewhere that has it spelled out for us right from sisi, coming soon (no Gäó).

In my honest opinion the drop ships are very unloved are for the sole fact I am not afraid of any hostile drop ship. Its sad to call dropships 'free kills' that's all they are. FREE KILLs.

I mean when was the last time any one of you said, 'Oh shoot its Launchpad McQuack get underneath something!'
Probably the last time was E3 Build, nobody complains about good drop-ship pilots anymore, good tank pilots are still complained about. The last guy who self proclaimed he was an ace pilot I shot down in one reload of forge gun.

Also for some reason shooting people out of gunner seats and passenger seats seems far more viable now than it was before.

Back in the E3 build when a drop ship did very much function like a drop ship should. Picking people up dropping them off and providing CAS and they weren't that indestructible back then either provided a forge gun hit them just right and catching them near the ground usually got them killed.

No it gets worse because the ships get more expensive and are still shot down just as easy. Also most competent tank pilots can shoot you down faster than you can nail them.

 Dropships!

Purpose 1: Carry players effectively across the map to important locations.
Purpose 2: Mobile CRU to avoid being spawn camped.
 Purpose 3: Be a distraction
 - If you fit your DS correctly, you will be able to fly away from stupid missiles.
 - Proto small blasters wreck faces

They should just make them about 50k cheaper for the militia varients. The dropship is pretty much a flying LAV and that's probably what there supposed to be. Even good dropships have a lot of trouble staying in the sky, but if uncontended they can really help an organized team move from point a to b.

Sorry folks, if yer gunners aint got small hybrid proficiency, and your pilot isn't amazingly good, dropships will always SEEM underpowered...I got Sm Hybrid Proff 3, Turret 5, Sm Hybrid Op 5, and I fly with an amazing pilot, I can rack up 33-0 in one match, also conversely sometimes the guy who really specced into forge guns comes out and I die, and we lose a 800k dropship...but really using a dropship as a weapon and not a troop transport requires a LOT of skill out of your pilot, and even more skill and communication out of your gunners. But frankly I personally have no problem wasting 2 surya's in one match and have done so before with my Corp Pilot running the show and me and another corpmate with turret skill in the other seat...tanks are free kills for us, cause their situational awareness is usually poor...but a good tanker with a rail can always get the drop if we're not careful too. Bear in mind drops aint meant to be gunner platforms, but it can be done. Nobody ever says "Oh NOES! A dropship! Everyone Hide!" because 90% of pilots run into the nearest solid object when a swarm hits them. When the skill of those dedicated to being pilots increases this will change.

 welcome to our world bro

the odd nose cannon kill feels very rewarding, and i still think if i had a good crew i could cause a nonrail tank some hell.. we have in the past... caused some harrass on tanks, but it's not garunteed to always work out, which makes getting the ADS crewed with ppl that know the routine, a cycled missle gunner and some AV hotdroppers vs a non rail tank, possibly one more gunner on a railgun turret, and 1 on missle, 2 hotdroppers, but that's asking for alot. actually screw the railguns those are still worthless.
