So tanks are in a lot of shooters these days, but it seems a bit of a disservice to me that armor is reduced to nothing more than an extra health bar. So I wanted to throw in a few possible concepts for tanks.
Option A. The Ultra-Hardcore tank option.
- Tanks have shields as a health bar. Tanks have fully modeled armor schemes and values. Weapon penetration is a factor. Angle of attack upon armor is considered.
- A penetrated tank will take damage depending upon where it was penetration. Tanks can have their engines and tracks blown out, effectively mobility killing it. A crew can be killed without destroying the tank, leaving it open to hacking.
- Upgrades to anti-tank weaponry increase penetrative values. A militia forge gun may only be able to penetrate the weakest parts of a tank, a prototype may be able to punch through front armor.
- Anti-Tank weapons are further subdivided between missiles and KEPs. A tank may armor its self more against one type at the cost of weakening its resistance to the other.
- Tanks are able to fire multiple ammo types from the same gun. A blaster might be able to fire antimatter rounds for high splash anti-infantry combat, or high density tungsten rounds for improved AP. Railguns, the same options. Cannons, canister rounds, HE rounds, or HVAPDS ammunition. Missiles, High Explosive, HEAT, and so on and so forth.
Obviously this is a bit absurd. Most people would be in way over their head, it would require a complete overhaul in the vehicle system, would restrict modeling freedom, and makes some assumptions about how vehicles in EVE work. I'd love to see it, but I'm certain it's not goin to happen. So this leaves us two more options.
Option B. The Tanking-lite option
- Tanks retain their armor-bar. Tank damage is modeled based off of where it gets hit: shooting a tank in the flank will deal significantly more damage to the side.
- Damaging a tank's tracks is possible. This will mobility kill the tank.
- Tanks get access to ammo types. Characteristics remain mostly the same, with EVE style range and damage adjustments.
- All other vehicle options remain the same.
More reasonable, certainly more possible. I favor the first, but this would at least make things a bit more tactical for the average player. Do we lob AV grenades at the front of the tank, or try to sneak around for a flanking blow? Who do you point your strong frontal armor at?
Option C. Current model.
And yes, I am a tank enthusiast. Guilty as charged. I'd love to see Dust give them the treatment I felt they deserved, instead of just going with generic lumps of metal. Give armor some love! |
