Back in the day of EVE, hull tanking was a viable thing. But people didn't use it, for a simple reason. Both shield and armor tanking give you a buffer before you die, having room for error, hull however makes it so if you make a mistake you lose the ship.
A few years have passed, and CCP has abandoned support for hull modules because nobody uses it.
Now they are making the same mistake in Dust with armor. The reason I use shields is because they give me a buffer, I use armor as time to get into cover. They also recharge much quicker, but that's another story and it seems they have fixed that somewhat with Uprising. Whenever I use Armor, its far more risky, as a single mistake and I'm dead much faster, with a lot less room for error. Its still viable, but just like hull tanking far back, people didn't use it because of the higher risk.
I cannot speak for vehicles, as I only used a Militia tank for ***** and giggles, but I assume its much the same. |

Arkena Wyrnspire wrote:Your hull is your body. If that's getting hit, you are having problems. The weapons in dust are designed to be hugely destructive, and the dropsuits to be hugely protective. When the protection of your dropsuit is stripped away, any weapon is going to shred your body. If your suit was 100% armor behind the shields, then the suit should be gone once the armor goes down. But it doesn't. That means there is another layer under the armor, the suit itself. You have to put gameplay before realism. |

It seems like that happens more often than you would expect too. Also, hull damage in this case would be your kidney getting vaporized by a blast of high energy plasma. That's not really the sort of thing you can "tank". The suit doesn't fall apart when you don't have armor. That means armor is just another layer. I doubt what's behind the armor is paper mache. |

The Orca industrial Capital ship is still the best being hull tanked due to its enormous amount of structure, trying to Shield or Armor tank it will fail in case you get mobbed somewhere. Just putting on a Damage Control II boosts it effective HP up to 200.000 EHP... Heh, that is like the only exception. Actually I think Hull tanking the Megathron might be viable. Or maybe hull tanking is so outdated because a lot of modules are missing, that it isn't anymore. |

Make a mistake with a shield tank and you are ******, sure its got speed on its side but if you got no repper and your hardners are used up you are relying on passive and 1 SL is enough to strip the shield of you, if its a FG your about ******. Armor on the shield tank is about 1k which isnt much and can get whacked by anything you cannot afford to let your shield tank get below 1k in shields
With armor your hardners/rep run longer and rep more back plus is over a period of time so if you get hit your rep makes up for it and by the time you hit top speed you should be safe. In general it soaks up more damage and allows more mistakes Still, if it was armor then you won't even have 1k, you would just be dead. |
