If you factor all the multiple toons that one player will create and erase, the players that played/disliked/then deleted dust, etc...
I wouldnt be surprised if there were only 100000 unique players that play somewhat regularly. (once a wk or more) |

It's an achievement, for sure. We all want to see CCP come out of this looking like the champions they are.
But it does bother me that that, based on server graphs, the average number of mercs playing each day hasn't changed noticebly since we hit the 1 million merc milestone.
I'd love to be corrected on this, but to me the implication is that DUST in it's current form is driving peeps away by the million. I definitely agree with mikegunnz about the multiple accounts and toons, but the only time I've created new characters is immediately after wipe - is that behaviour atypical?
I'm hoping(well, begging actually) one of you smart cookies can explain to me how I'm wrong about this. |

Honestly, the few people I showed the game to liked it for what it is and the level of depth over other FPS type games.
They called it a FPS/RPG. One guy had a hard time as a assault so he switched to a heavy suit and started doing much better while the other switched to a logi with a MD/laser combo (he has a few setups, im so proud) |

Pretty sure the million mark was counting every character that's ever existed, and so is the new 2 million mark.
Many of those characters have been deleted, some of which have been replaced.
We also have no way to measure how many of these "new" characters are actually new, and how many are alts that people have decided to create for some reason. |

Unless CCP opens up the API a little more so we can get more info, we won't know for sure.
Assuming every player created three characters per account and no biomassing occurred, the base number would be around close to 670,000 characters which is far greater than the current 500,000+ subscribers from Eve Online. Keep in mind though that Eve Online took 10 years to reach it's 500,000+ subscriber milestone while Dust 514 hasn't even been fully released and already it's reached the 670,000 character milestone.
That brings the total to 1,170,000 characters and subscribers. |

while I think the number is possibly higher I dont see a problem with it, EVE took ten years to get to just over 5 times that.
And at any one time there are <50,000 playing.
What I hear most often from FPS players who have DL'd it is that they are waiting to try the "finished" product before they tear themselves away from their current games.

still, we reached the 1M mark in less than 2 weeks. 2M took a long time. Game growth slowed way down. |

The people on my FL who have tried out the game and will probably never play it again because they deleted it, and those who tried it out but have never touched it againGÇöcombinedGÇögrossly outweigh the people who have stuck with it. Some of them actually made more than one character, too. Although this is only anecdotal and a small test group, so to speak, I suspect this is systemic to the overall playerbase.
That said, I am fairly confident that this number is misleading in terms of how many active players there are. |

Yeah I more or less force all my RL friends to try dust out, and almost all of them haven't played since the first time. Did get 2 people into dust though :) so I'm counting it as a win. |

I'm fine with people leaving. In fact I personally want lots of peeps to be winnowed out by DUST until there's nothing left but hyper-intelligent killers who spend the day kicking my ass up and down the street.
But the crucial difference between EVE and DUST is that DUST needs the playerbase to support matchmaking and reduce queue times. No amount of optimization or content in the world can compensate for a 4 minute queue.
The thing i'm most interested and most afraid to discover in the new build is what happens to pub match queue times when a lot of us are hitting Planteary Conquest hard. If pub queue times stretch out to 3-4 minutes, we have a serious problem.
My hope is that CCP has improved the core gameplay mechanics so much in the new build that player retention rate goes up by a noticeable margin. |
