I know this has been posted before but my idea is slightly different. People say it can't be done, but really it's not a huge change to the engine that's required. Just draw a ceiling where there is already an invisible ceiling, change the textures to metallic, and bam...you're in a space station. Before you say vehicles would be crazy indoors, you have to understand these space stations are enormous. They fit unlimited numbers of spacecraft, battleships, freighters, etc. you could easily roll a tank down the docking bay and no one would notice.
Another thing is, why not be able to attack the MCC when the shield's are down? This has already been done in Battlefield 2142. Same concept: to destroy the MCC you have to get inside and destroy the warp core. That was the most fun part of the game! Forced close-range, urban combat. It levels the battlefield to handheld weapons without vehicles. You could use dropships or maybe some sort of launch pod on a land vehicle to get inside. Maybe the MCCs could be armed with destroyable turrets for defense...
Or how about taking titans? Not player controlled ones, but maybe an NPC Titan could be simulated? This is the least viable, I think, but it would essentially be like attacking a "space hulk" with armored "space marines" in the Warhammer 40k universe. The idea of walking down dark corridors filled with rogue drones and armed enemies in a heavy would remind me of Aliens or Warhammer 40k...it would be something many SCI-fi fans have been waiting for....
Just some crazy ideas, but not impossible to implement... It would add more depth to the game, and open up more ideas for modules, maps, etc. and also would make the gameplay a lot more tactical...

I would be all for fighting in NPC ships or NPC stations, but EVE players shouldn't be vulnerable to losing their ships or outposts to mercenaries. |

Anyway it could be balanced. EVE players could put out a bounty for defending their ship. And mercs would be transfered by slow moving ships that could be blown up. |

They're saving station and ship PvP for the second iteration of Incarna. DUST is the prototype.
