Greetings all Dust mercs, I am The Lottery Man, and I'm here to ask you a simple question; Do you like making lots of money?
If the answer is yes, then good news, as the National Lottery is finally here and can be played in New Eden. Everyone is eligible for entry and the isk prizes could make any who win exceedingly rich. This is a non-profit endevour by me to encourage some more of that good old risk/reward gaming found so easily EVE side, but is sadly lacking here in Dust right now.
For a ticket price of a mere 200k isk you will be entered into a winner takes all pot, with the prize draw taking place every saturday from now until the end of time*. Winners will be determined by my usage of the mystical arts of lottery divination, ancient scrying techniques, and impartial dice roller programs. Mostly that last one.
As for the mechanism as to how this system will work, it's rather easy; either yourself or one of your alts may apply to my corp, who I will then approve. You then simply make the donation of 200k isk to The National Lottery and send me a message indicating you have done so. You or your alt then leaves my corp. Alternatively, I can have my alt, The Lottery Man jr, join your corp and you can make the payment directly to him. I will then have him leave and rejoin The National Lottery Corp to add your payment to the pot.
Tickets may be purchased from 12AM GMT Monday, until 6PM GMT Saturday. I will conduct the draw and announce the winner at 9PM GMT Saturday, each week. Winners can then receive their prize money in the same way, with either they or their alt joining The National Lottery to be payed, or by having my alt join their corp and deposit the winnings directly into their corp wallet, whichever you prefer.
In the future I hope this will be much simpler, with direct monetary transfers, but for now this is the only viable way to work.
Now, I know what you're all thinking and screaming at your pc monitors; "Bah, this is a scam Lottery Man! Why would anyone buy your ticket, for the promise of an isk payout that may never come?" Allow me to attempt to waylay your fears right now;
1) Firstly, no, I don't expect everyone to jump at this frankly outstanding opportunity outright. New Eden is a cold, untrusting place and none of you know if I'm trust worthy, but I hope with time I can gain such trust with my shows of good faith each week as a lucky individual walks away with a stash of isk.
2) 200k isk Is hardly a lot of money, so its not like you're going to lose much if nothing comes of this event. And as I stated above, I hardly expect this to draw a massive crowd, so stealing the pot is not even worth my time or the effort it took to set this up. It would also take a LOT of people to pay into this to make it worth my while of stealing anything. Tens of millions is hardly a lot of money right now, nor will it be in the future especially with PC and FW on the way, but a prize amount of the same is enough to buy a winner that tank he needs, that proto weapon or suit for a week, etc, and if I can help those people aquire those things, well, then that makes me happy.
3) This is New Eden, a universe of businesses, megacorps, banks and an entire player run economy, yet we Dusters run around shooting each other and.... that's all. It's time we started acting like the universe we are living in. For my part, this is an attempt at a philanphropic gesture of goodwill, to get people to take a (rather tiny) risk, and see some substantial benefits from that. Really, I just want to make some people rich.
So, that is my proposal; Play the lottery, potentially earn millions! Who among you will take the first steps and win BIG?!

I suspected as much, but not quite so quickly. I can only tell you that I am attempting to run a legitimate enterprise here. If only a handful were willing to take a chance I would show you that. Is 200k really so precious to you? What do you lose by not taking that chance? If it is indeed a scam as you all so ludly proclaim, then don't you gain the satisfaction of calling me out as a liar?
I shall reiterate, in case the naysayers didn't fully grasp the concept previously; it is not worth the time or effort to make this a scam. I am fully aware that this is not going to be massively popular. Weekly winnings may only come to a few million if only a handful of people are willing to take the risk, hardly worth the effort of stealing it, would you not agree? I could make that kind of money in a short enough time by playing normally, there would be no need to set up such a scam.
What I am trying to do here is something for the community of Dust, a small little earner for a lucky player each week who's willing to take a small chance. I can only hope that a few have the courage to take that chance. |

You make a valid point that it is impossible to see who has donated to a corp wallet with the current system we have in place, which is why the only way to be safe would be for me to accept only 1 person into the corp at any one time, make a note of how much money is currently in the pot at that time, wait until the person has donated for their ticket, then let them leave/kick them. Having say, 2 people in the corp and then coming back to find only an increase of 200k would leave me in the predicament of not knowing which person has actually donated.
This is much slower, and more time consuming, to the point where if there is enough interest I may be unable to accept payment for everyone within the week, but it is the only safe method of ensuring people have actually payed for their tickets. I pray for the day that ccp implements a tracking system for donations, so that I could more easily see who has payed and who hasn't. It would be even better if we could do direct transfers. Here's hoping for the next build then.
The other option of course, is for my alt to join each persons corp and be payed directly from the wallet under the direction of the person purchasing the ticket, who I would presume would then reimburse his corp. I beleive both of these methods are sound, unless there is some other, more expedient and safer method of transfer I am unaware of.
Icy Xenosmilus wrote:I'm down for this. It's only 200 k, I can usually make double that in a good skirmish. How do I send?
Exactly as explained above and in my opening post good sir! Send an application to my corp The National Lottery, and once accepted use the donation button to pay for your ticket, then vacate the corp so the next buyer may enter. In fact, Icy Xenosmilus, I now realise that other npc corp fellows like yourself will only be able to pay this way, as I would of course be unable to transfer to your corp to accept payment directly from yourselves. This is problematic and unfortunate. Another reason to hope for direct transfers coming soon **hint hint ccp*
Kain Spero wrote:Do you have any past record of running a lottery?
Honestly, I cannot say I do, no. However I doubt many of us have past records of running mercenary corporations either, yet we are all entrepanours in New Eden. I do however believe the system I have come up with is fair, straight forward, albeit convoluted somewhat by neccesity and will work for now, until more options are open to us. |

This is honestly to much work for a scam in my opinion to invite wait for the donation, then remove for every 200k. It's probably more work that just playing the game and earning ISK.
For that reason alone I suspect that it's not a scam. I'm personally not interested as I think the pot won't get very big on this.

It's a decent scam for a number of reasons:
- It's a fairly cheap buy-in making it both less of a risk for the individual and avoiding being restrictive to players with less money.
- A profit can be made while legitimacy is being established, both through taxing every ticket and being dishonest about the number of tickets sold. Without a means of ensuring transparency with ticket sales, The Lottery Man could easily say that ten tickets were sold and base the prize on that when, in reality, one hundred tickets have been sold.
- The Lottery Man alt is an easily burnable account once the lottery is popular enough that the prize pool is a tempting way out.
- The Lottery Man could very trivially create an alt to award the prize money to while maintaining the illusion of legitimacy.
- Even if those who understand New Eden don't buy in and warn against it, plenty of idiots will shrug and argue "it's only one match" and pay up. Their apparent lack of victimisation will legitimise future draws.
- The Lottery Man is risking nothing but time.

You do not need to leave your corporation you only need to make an alt to jump into The National Lottery corp. Once prize money is awarded, assuming no scamming has taken place, the alt meanders back to your home corporation, or a proxy corporation where you can distribute the money to yourself. It is a bit of work but should not hinder your ability to stay legitimate. A dummy corp for money transfers shouldn't look to bad on a Mercenaries resume.
Also, even if the tickets were taxed winning a few million for the cost of 200k isk is a tempting offer. I'm not saying that I will be an addict but you can start an alt every week and get a free 200k. Not much risk involved. |

Well, it appears I've had a fairly equal number of interested parties as I have detracters, which I suppose is to be expected really. I've done my best to hopefully gain peoples interest and see if this can take off, the only thing to do now is see where it goes.
As of right now, ticket sales for the first national lottery prize draw are open to all who wish to take part. Either yourself or your alt may apply for my corp and I will accept you 1 at a time to make your purchase, or you can message me to have my alt join your corp to await payment.
Please note that if you are using an alt to make the payment, it is the alts name that will be placed into the draw, to avoid confusion should you win, or any attempts by people to pass themselves off as anyone else.
Please also note that if you wish for my alt to make the transfer that I currently only have the ONE alt, The Lottery ManJR. Any other variations on this name are not me and no payment should be made to them. Please be sure it is the correct character should you see him applying to join you before doing so.

Risk for the individual, low. Gain for Lottery Man if many have this same feeling, high.
He could even afford to give some cash to one of those who bought a ticket (much less than total takings). Next week, people invest a little more because he didn't rip them off the first time. Eventually, individuals are risking more and The Lottery Man one day decides not to give out the prize. What does he lose compared to what the players, collectively, are putting up? |
