It is my understanding that Prototypes, by definition, are works in progress. That being said, they are more than likely to change, and improve, as time goes on. Can this same logic be applied to the Prototypes of Dust? Should it be?

Its just so they can call the gear PRO.

 Like a PRO.

 Thats totally PRO.

So what does that say about people using standard (STD) gear? They're gross?

Usually a prototype is something built so that it can show off what your product can do. Taking, for example, a new rifle. They'd spend thousands of man-hours designing a top--of-the-range gun, so that you prove you can build it. Then, for mass production, you take away the expensive parts either altogether, or replace them with cheaper parts. Hence prototypes > advanced.

Except that prototypes are, to my understanding, preliminary models displaying upcoming changes and/or designs. What you described, to me, is a proof-of-concept model.

I agree that prototype is a misnomer.

The real prototypes are what I make and test for my corpmates while waiting for a new build.

 I agree.

They imply that they are test versions of something better. Sure, sometimes a batch of prototypes are made of top tier materials. But, they are only few unique pieces.

 A renaming would be good.

Mass produced items sold openly on a marketplace cannot be prototypes, it is indeed a misnomer.

Yes, I would like a renaming, plus actual prototype gear. In my world, "prototype" gear would be a high-level tier that has a whole lot of variants that sacrifice certain advantages for others. So you might have a prototype logi suit that can only equip a sidearm (instead of a light weapon), but decreases scan precision (for watching your back while supporting a heavy). Or a scout suit that reduces sprint speed and stamina but increases regular running speed. Haven't really thought them out, I'm sure people could come up with some creative ideas for "prototype" suits.

I'd also think these would be limited in runs by requiring the BPC's to be found in EVE, the suits produced, etc. You wouldn't ever "run out" exactly, in the sense that there would never be any more suits ever again, but you'd still get scarcity over time.

In lieu of prototype, what then would be a better name? Or, perhaps, CCP could go the other route and have the suites slightly change over time, which would be.. interesting.. to say the least.
