WARNING: This will be a long read as well.
As a sniper, my opinion has been gradually changing more and more. Especially in light of our recent practice matches against our allies.
Here are my new conclusions:
- Sniper Riles are for noobs. (It's true. It's only good for low-tiers. Sniper rifles proto and below are **** crap against higher tier players, even with multiple damage mods. When it takes a proto-sniper 3+ rounds (out of a 5-round clip, and your shields catch 2 of those 3 rounds) to down you, you are in a VERY good spot. Congratulations.)
- Sniper Rifles are mostly useless. (Yes, you can save an ally from being flanked. Or finish off an opponent, that is fighting a blueberry. Or maybe have a good angle on an objective terminal. But it won't matter. Often, you'll kill the flanker a second too late. Or your hit detection will bug out at a critical moment. Or there will be multiple guys (mostly shield tanks) stirring around in place as they hack the objective you are designated to defend (sorry your clip just isn't big enough to get them all off of the objective); and you only have roughly 3-5 seconds to track and pull off 3 headshots (if they are proto-suits, not even headshots will do enough damage fast enough). Use a tactical? Might work. Miss once, and you failed, and you will fail a lot.)
- Sniper Rifles don't have much of a niche to fill. (As more and more players spec up their Assaults and Assault Rifles, they are increasingly resistant to sniper damage, and their ARs in general are nailing targets excess of 130m. This means there is no place a sniper can go to perform his duty effectively on any map short of Manus' Peak. Remember, this is a VERY fast, ZERO sway, VERY mobile, 130m AR range. An AR on the Ashlands map will hit and kill a sniper on the main tower.)
- Sniper Rifles and the Sniper role will never be balanced. (As long as the dead-brained continue to think it's unfair to be shot from a position they can't reach on foot. Snipers are regulated to exterior areas of the map where they are easily flanked and have few good angles on objectives. This dramatically reduces their impact on the game. With the introduction of more cover and objects to hide behind, the fixing of damage mods, and NO base damage boost for SRs on the horizon; the sun will continue to set on this niche, if it hasn't already. Red Zone was increased, camping positions removed, that alone shows the direction where this niche role is headed.)
In a match against our allies last night, I didn't even bother go into a sniper perch after I saw how much damage my sniper rifle did to our opponents. Can I please scratch your paint more? I just ran a Type-1 Assault Raven suit with BPOs and an Exile for the rest of the fight, and I put up way more of a fight when I did.
All I'm waiting for now, is to see what this next build in April will bring... Any other hits to niche roles, and I will just play Assault. Niches be damned. Just make a decision and turn this game into a CoD already. I'll spec up an Assault. Max it out, and then quit Dust514, because there will be nothing else to bother skill into. Cept maybe Jets and Gunships, at least before those get nerfed to all hell.
I'm literally on my last thread of hope for this game. Everything for me, depends on the next build. |

Funny, I just got out of a match where the entire enemy team were snipers. Every. Single. One. They had a 360 view of the map and if you tried to do anything you died, bam, just like that. And the only counter is... more sniping. Do you see the problem?
My suggestion: Make snipers rifle be more like battle rifles. Snipers will stay close to their team but a bit farther. They will be giving covering fire and information about enemy positions all while still being useful. Why? Because they are not a KM away, they're here with you, only a few seconds sprint away. That means they hack objectives, give support to the team by covering fire (which is semi auto and can be shot pretty fast at this range) and be scouts.
This is what Battlefield 3 did, at least at the start before you got the heavy snipers, and it worked for the first few days of BF3. |

Charge sniper with 3 (or 4) damage mods works fine. Puts out 500+ damage to anywhere, nearly 1K damage to the head. 5 shots in a clip, it can even half charge to finish people off. Why use any other sniper? |

Yes, I see the problem they caused. They were meant to be a serious obstruction. Did that sniper team actually win the match? My hats off to them if they did. If not, they done goofed.

This^ I wouldn't have minded this. Everyone coming to Dust expects them to work that way, and they don't have the dps to beat ARs up close anyway. (I've belted all 3 rounds from a Tac SR into an assault at 60m before. He went down, and his buddy got me mid-reload.) If they want to hit at longer ranges, just reduce the effective %.
But nooooo... snipers aren't supposed to be used up close, that makes for problems, but they're a damn problem at long range too. Go figure.
The Burst AR, is the closest thing to a battle rifle that we have now. I loved the Tac AR. That's precisely the purpose it was meant to serve before it was nerfed. I loved it.
But we have no choice but to wait for the next build or so. Gauss Rifle? Scrambler Rifle? Custom sights? Different little things like this can refine and alleviate some of the frustrations that everyone feels.
It's ALL about the next build.

Well, I play with a mouse, and I sometimes experience (pardon the pun) pre-fire or misfire while retaining a charge.
I find the operation of the charged sniper problematic. I prefer to track the target and press. Almost no chance of a shot being fired off cue.
I usually run 3 damage mods at any given time, and I like the general RoF I deliver with a standard.
But if you're recommending to give the Charge Sniper a go... and use it more regularly, I'll give it a try. |

oh i'm afraid there are still people running around with Thale and other protos taking out anything proto in one shot... i watched a proto heavy, at full sheild and armor get dropped, one shot, by a STD... that should not happen, infact, in my mind MLT should hurt like hell, but take more than 3 shots to down a heavy, and never one shot anything other than another scout.
i only expect to get 1hk occasionally, because the way i see it, the GEK and Duvolle seem to hit harder than snipers, worse yet, i rather dislike that Snipers do nothing but sit on building tops away from any other people.... and can only be shot, by other snipers. yet i would think someone should be able to drop something like a mortar on those mountain and rooftops.
in fact.. i hope there is a more man portable mortar system someday. useless cqc, but good for area control |

Actually, they did win. There was like one guy in a scout suit uninterrupted because snipers made sure anyone coming anywhere close an objective gets hammered. And then he went sniping too. In hindsight I could use an LAV and use it as cover to hack the control points, but still, kinda stupid how the match turned out. And it wouldn't be like that without bad design. Its not like it was one Militia sniper covering an area. There were at least 3 snipers covering every area of the map, using either Prototype or Officer gear. It took less than 4 seconds for a heavy out of cover to die. My assault didn't fare well considering even though I could strafe to avoid sniper fire from one direction, the other had an easy shot. And I can't doge fire from all directions. Especially if I try to have a firefight where I have to focus on the enemy. |
