Almost all MMO will let you progress your character/account through grinding, questing, micro-transaction so that you will ultimately end up doing one of two things: (1) - Become a PvP Elite or (2) - Become a Dungeon/Raid Badass. Then you will spend the next eternity repeating these instances until you have a few sets of end game gear and then it's pretty much just a regular ritual with your drunken guild friends.
It sounds bland but let's face it, people dig it, or it wouldn't be around for this long and in just about every good mmo ever made. People love farming, raiding, complain while farming and raiding. But we keep coming back.
One of the biggest potential I see for Dust 514 is that it can do this (and of course more) by basically skipping to the end. Cause after all it's not a mmorpg. It's a very unique mmo (and I like it), which goes a bit beyond the tradition levelling system.
Thus my point is I'd love to see some well designed instances in this game that completely skip (and with the existing mechanics it already somewhat has) the "getting there" part and jump straight to the repeatable (perhaps once a day) instances where your squad (either made of random people or existing corp) go into a pre-made instance (which will probably have some vague link to the "story") and fight through it with an ending crescendo of both enemy and reward (perhaps it can be scaled to individual progress).
I trust you can come up with some great ideas whether it involves ships or supplies or orbital strikes. One of the most unique thing about EVE online is it's living environment where plays are at each other's throats, and I'm not suggest we take the focus away from that. I'm just saying a common enemy in-game could also be very welcome.
I have great confidence that a team as experienced with a dynamic environment/progression as the people who gives you EVE online would have no problem coming up with continuous ways to improve or create new events / instances for the raid lovers.
I always thought story instances or dungeon challenges was a bit easier and less "alive" then multi-PvP or RvR (or Empire v Empire for those who like puns). But it's also relaxing and comfortable, and helps build a certain virtual-camaraderie. I for one would love to have it be part of the Dust 514 experience. |
