If Eve is any indication of the potential where Dust can end;- now would be a good time to take a step back and plan on what you would eventually like to get into.
Some people like me who hve been in a mad race to capitalize on the SP gains and are over 6 million SP or more would by now have their proto suits and proto gear. But after playing Eve for a bit now I have realized that saving up that SP in Dust is a good idea. Here is why;-
1. Eve has a time based progression system. This means that the mre time you spend on Eve the more skills you get. However if you don't add anything to your training queue those skills don't get trained. Dust however even you don't play, you do get the passive SP. You can always save up that SP and not spend it till you actually need to or have to spend it.
2. Certain tactics in Eve differ from that in Dust. For example, for shield tanking a lot of people use shield boosters and shield regens when driving Caldari tanks i.e. Gunlogi or Sigaris. However when I fly my Amarr dropship even though I can fit a shield booster and shield regen I don't even bother with that. I just focus on maxing out my capacitor. So the tactics differ by the race you end up playing. When Amarr and Mimitar tanks come out we will need to adapt and change our tactics accordingly.
3. The Eve/Dust universe is vast. New weapons and weapon groups are most likely to come out. Trying out those weapons then and then protoing them would be easier if your SP is saved up.
4. Not everyone is a fighter. One maybe a good accountant or a deal maker. Someone who is good at buying thinfs low and selling them high making a profit for his/her corp. If Dust is getting the same industry and trade tree in Eve, it might me something saving up your SP for.
As the possibilities with Dust are endless and the odds of CCP putting in a re-specking system in place is very low saving up your SP to use later on would be a more wiser approach.
In the case of pubs having a B Series dropsuit should suffice. Thanks to the Neo dropsuits you cant now get proto suits at the advance level and the same goes for weapons.

If I could see something coming down the pipe that I wanted trained to a high level when it arrives I'd save some SP for it. However, I've focused on core skills and logistics equipment and I still have plenty I want trained up from the current skill tree. I have one suit and two weapons to operation level 3. I'm waiting on taking those further so that I can get my core skills higher and maybe have a wider selection when I'm ready to train more things. |

I read in a post when I first started, that you shouldn't spend SP unless you know why you are spending it and what it will get you.
Best advice yet.

Good points, but I agree w/ the methodology of getting the passive skills out of the way because there is no reason to hold off on those items.
As for everything else, might as well wait to see what new items come out. But really, if I had a few million SP in the bank, I'm not sure I could resist spending some of it..... ;)

why i'm focusing in my passives, they apply to everything in game, just like in eve.

This, a million times. I have not specced into any suits, and only level 1 of a few weapons to try them out, except scrambler pistols, which I love. My points have gone into weaponry, armour, shields, profile reduction, precision enhancement, ammo capacity, light weapon range and stamina boosts.
I don't need to save for these things, as the sooner I get each of them upgraded the sooner I get the benefits of them all, and the sooner they help keep me alive. I can regen stamina as fast as a type 2 suit whilst still in a militia fit, and have enough stamina to run accross entire maps without stopping, the extra armour has saved my life on many occasions when I've had only a sliver of life left, the extra rounds in my pistol mag has allowed me to drop enemies that would have otherwise killed me, my rediculously low profile on my assault puts scout suits to shame and my laser can outrange viziams at times and has enough excess ammo that I can afford to fire completely off-target to preheat before cutting someone down in 1 second flat.
I've killed proto suits in a 20k militia fit, have an obscene amount of money for running such cheap suits and will never feel like I've wasted sp on anything.
Passive ftw. |
