My character has only skilled into drop ships. Its a new character after many false starts. After spending 3.3 million SP so far into DS and the supporting systems I wondered how many SP are needed to get to a pretty solid level.
My Estimate : 5 Million. That's for a solid level not a final destination level. Any DS pilots at the 5 mill mark have an opinion? Is my estimate correct? far off?
At 3.3 Million I get a CRU and 4500 HP. But I cant fit some module builds I would like and enough shield recharge and armour rep rate. I figue to get these up there plus some more weapon efficiency I need another 2 million or so SP.
It's seems you have to spend point in both armour and shield systems (starting in one or other) to make best use of the high/low slots.
The threads question : Is about 5 million a good estimate of a solid DS skill tree spend? |

You could make a "solid" build with 2-3mill, purely dedicated to Drop-ships.
5mill, you would have most main/support skills @ 5 and be running armor or shield.
The problem is... they just aren't worth the investment atm |

I'm investing in them atm so I can properly feedback to the devs. This is a beta so I figure that i should take part in making sure DS are viable in future builds.
The downside is the cost of finding the problems.

Unfortunately they are THAT broken. There's nothing more that can be said on the matter, that hasn't already been said. The current problems need to be addressed before any meaningful thought can happen.

I just deleted a wall of text because I realised one quote summarised my long-winded post quite succintly.
"A knife is only as good as the one who wields it." - Patrick Ness, The Knife of Never Letting Go
Perhaps, just perhaps, flying dropships have less to do with SP and more to do with PS. Pilot skills.

This is demonstrably false. Take a pilot with 300 000 SP in drop ships and put him in a "as it comes" millita version. Get him to play a match in the same way he would on his 5 million sp main with a 5000hp Prom. If what you state is true then his success rate and survieability will be exactly the same in both ships.
I submit that it would not be. I have yet to see edvidence that two such disparately leveled characters played by the same person have performed equally. |

I can make drop ships dance no problem, even got a couple of kills landing it on peoples heads. But thats unacceptable, there is little to no incentive to fly dropships. |

This is what I was doing and why I see it as a 5 mill plus play style. I really noticed the benefits after going deep into some skills even though they no longer made new market place items available. The small % in PG and CPU reduction add up and many more fitting options opened up.
So as I see it a full on pilot (my goal) has to go to lvl 5 in trees jst for the pg/cpu savings. My eventual goal is to open each DS tree i.e up to promethus and Eyrx as it stands now; so I can bring any type of ship of any build to a battle as my corp (when I find one that will have me) wants.
I see times where a shield build might be needed or a tank depending on the turrets on the field and the map layout. Open map with low buildings often means rail tanks sniping from afar and rail turrets, so tank might be better. That kind of thing.

Before wipe, I had Prometheus and Myron. It was great because I would armor tank a flying CRU and become an objectives worst nightmare, but other times called for more complex set ups so the high slots of Myron really helped in dabbling into many different roles. |

Your argument seems to rely on treating "less" as if it means "nothing" and treating "more" as if it means "everything" so you've come up with a thought experiment pitting all SP against no SP, which isn't what Vyzion said at all.
Also, most of the capable pilots I know don't even bother to fly an Eryx or Prom because they're pretty much a downgrade.
So, yeah, I'll happily ditch my Myron or my Grimsnes and cruise around in a Viper (with a couple of modifications, mainly blasters, because your argument that "as it comes" is required is silly) because with afterburners failing to work as a "get out of Dodge" button, a pilot basically needs to be capable of avoiding any damage at all. |

As much as I want everything that has to do with DS, I just can't justify dropping a million SP just to get the Eryx or Prometheus. Seems I can do ALOT better fittings with my Viper. So why not use that million SP for other, more usefull skills...

There are more variations coming (maybe not next build). Go to a Surya or Madrugar or Soma and 'Show Info'. Go to 'Variations'. There you will see a Creodron 'Breach' Surya. So I can expect that variations outside of logistics and normal are coming for the dropship as well. I personally hate the current logistics variation and Mobile CRUs for that matter. I'm awaiting the Electronic Warfare variation that allows you to suck the charge out of capacitors. |
