Really getting tired of trying to reverse and the tank doing everything but, it turns as if trying, sometimes it literally just flips suddenly,. I'm losing tanks due to poor reverse controls please CCP do something about the steering system. |

A tank is a zero turn vehicle. Meaning, it can turn a full 360 degrees of rotation without needing forward or reverse motion. Treads moving in opposite directions allow for this kind of movement. Yet, the controls for the tank in game do not allow us to turn 180 degrees (or at all) without moving forward or backward.
It seems to me that programming tank movement is just about the easiest thing a developer crew can do in a FPS. Move stick 90 degrees left, the left tread moves backwards and the right tread moves forward, turning the vehicle left WITHOUT moving from its current spot. Turn the stick 90 degrees right, the opposite. Straight up moves both treads forward and straight down moves both treads backwards. I believe Halo 1 managed to figure in out no problem, how is it that a DEV crew more than a decade later isn't able to?
Its even easier on keyboard. W = forward, A = zero turn left, D = zero turn right and S = reverse.
Angling the stick or hitting two KB buttons, then, adjusts the speed the treads move to make the tank move forward but slightly left or right or reverse but slightly left or right.
Ultimately, this is not impossible since nearly every game with tanks uses controls like this. Why not Dust?
The current motion scheme works perfectly with LAVs, which are wheel driven, but a tank does not drive like a wheeled vehicle. |

It is simple, but CCP messed it up.
Throw the stick right, but a tiny bit forward and you turn right. Throw the stick right, but a tiny bit rearward and you back up left.
Or at least that's what I remember from the time I spent tanking. It made trying to turn in a cramped location a very finicky process that usually ended up banging into walls and getting blown up before getting out of the area. The damn thing kept spinning in the opposite direction that I wanted. |
