It depends heavy on what you're trying to achieve.
Better K/D ratio? Go for the SMG.
Looking for a real challenge? Go for the Nova Knives. |

I tried the scrambler, but my aim sucks. I had more success with the SMG. |

Not really looking for a challenge, but a different way to backup the laser for CQC situations. I'm using assault with around 350 shields. Think who will win in CQC, me or him? |

Go with what fits with your style, but if you're using a laser rifle your scrambler pistol is the most logical side arm in terms of overlapping game play for similarites.
Now if you are trying to cover a disadvantage the SMG has it and is a very suitable option for things that laser rifle simply wont deal with. |

K, everyone knows that, how is that relevant? Sniper rifle does more damage than an AR, learn to Aim. |

In that case, go for the SMG. Now if you want to really practice your aim in a CQC situation, pistol is the way to go. |

because it IS relevant. It is worth spending the time training yourself to get headshots with the pistol because of that benefit. SMG is ok. Pistol rocks. |

So Nova Knifes can't kill a a standard AR suit at CQC??? Assuming both at full HP and strafing, the guy is shooting at me.

depends how far are you willing to spend into SMG? with sharpshooter proficiency 3 and SMG operations 5 you are able to hold your own with ARs at range as long as you can out dance them, with nova knives its like a really slow really close range shotty. Personally the SMG is my goto side arm due to its versatility when skilled into (its kinda mediocre unskilled) but a smart SP player can out DPS and out fight any SMG any day. nova knives I would stay away from unless you really want to use them like the scout they cater to a certain player type and are out classed by everything on the field, not to say useless but extremely specialized and require more practice and skills then they are worth if you do not want to make them your primary method of attack. |

I like to run the SMG on my laser fits for two reasons. The first is that people like to take on lasers at close range. The SMG makes them think twice about that.
The second reason is that I like to spread out damage types on my fits. If my main is better against shields i run the SMG for the damage bonus to armor, and vice versa.
If you go with the SMG, carry flux nades. It's a great combo. |

Honestly nova knives seem utterly useless to me unless \you max out their skill then they might work a little. With basic nova knives and weaponry V I cannot even get into a Logis armor with a direct hit to the back, and yes I know how to charge them. I would like to see some kind of back attack assassination with nova knives rather than them being able to only really drop enemy shields. Only got one kill with nova knives when I caught a scout from behind...... anything heavier probably would have turned and sprayed killing me rather fast. |

Sweet joy abounds! Today I had two waves including no less than five KNova Knivers come at me in my Baby Heavy*. They all died, of course, with bursts to their lettuce heads leaving barely enough remains to make a salad between them all.
Yes, yes, please yes choose KNova Knives For The KDeath. Yours, not mine.
* Militia Heavy suit. My alt uses real versions. And the real HMGs. Watch them die from afar with the Assault HMG as they rush in to finish off the Heavy. Good clean fun, well, when the nanites reduce them to ash anyway. |

I'd recommend SMG.
You really need a specialised fit to make the most of Nova Knives, and having a Laser Rifle would get in the way of that effectiveness.
Lasers lose effectiveness at too long a range for Knives to be a practical backup weapon.
As people have said, the Pistol is awesome if you're good with it - but in saying that, a good SMG user in tight CQC range can make the necessary headshot a VERY tricky proposition.
Also, the Laser vs. Shields, then SMG vs. Armour combo is a nasty one if you can time it right (not so easy against a shield-tanked Scout). |

That's not what I meant. I meant that if you want a weapon that requires extreme precision, go for the pistol. The Nova Knives work well in CQC but only if you go for the Prototype level. |

If it's too close to kill with the laser rifle, the scrambler pistol will scramble it for you. Just remember to take your time and aim for the head. |
