Back long ago there was a game called battletech, where one side had inferior tech and training and the other had superior tech and training. The stated goal of the superior side was the conquest and unification of the side with the inferior tech, and had they come at them with their full force they would have roflstomped the inferior tech and the game would have been rendered un-interesting.
However in order to avoid that, the superior side had to bid on fights. Whoever had the lowest bid in terms of # and power of combatants got the bid and could persecute the battle. Those with a higher bid could not, and had to wait until the next battle.
I think this type of system would be good to have in dust as there will be vets who have gained in both skill (hard to quantify) and skill points (much easier to quantify). Pitting someone with superior skills and equipment vs someone with inferior skills and equipment is akin to a highschooler stealing lunch money from a elementary school child, there's not much challenge in it. Nor would I think it would be much fun for either side.
Instead I think there should be an SP cap on battles, and potentially an ISK cap as well where the player could bid how much ISK they wanted to use (in terms of fitting value) for the upcomming battle. Each battle would have an isk cap and the matchmaker could build teams based on SP value as well as isk value.
If you want to arrange a game wiht a high cap you should be able to do so, but I think that public matches where the bulk of new players will be is not the right place for it.
This should only hold true for public matches, but I think such a bidding system could also make it interesting when dust corps bid on contracts setup by eve corps.

Sounds like a fun idea. I can imagine the lore behind it: the vets get bored between corp battles, and want some fun. So they go into an "arena", or a training ring, where they fight the new recruits. Or, rather, they bid to "train" the new recruits. |

but in battletech, it was one unit, a clan trinary, vs one unit, a inner sphere regiment. Balancing like what your suggesting would require 1 corp v 1 corp battles, no pug's allowed. And then the corps would have to be ranked. And then the top corp would have to bid low to fight a lower rank corp. |

New Eden is about bullies and unfair fights... and finding a way to misdirect those overwhelming odds, or overcome them.
So this idea has very little merit here.
If this was a different game, the idea would be fine. It just isn't. |

The clans were not the nicest of people. How many worlds did they nuke? How many times did they betray the Inner Sphere after an agreement? The Star League can't reform. |

Oh I have found my people. I have actually thought such bidding would be very appropriate for this setting considering the risk assessment part of this universe. I actually imagine such biddings happening right there on the warbarge holo table.
Oh and I have to shout me some clan ghost bears. |

I'm just going to bump this thread, because it's awesome.
Also, Jade Falcon mention earns a +1 from me. |
