CCP Eterne wrote:We have been getting a lot of questions about Skill Point resets lately. In order to help everyone find this information, here is CCP's official stance on resetting skill points.
We currently have no plans to reset your characters' skill points to a state where they are equivalent to a newly created character, barring something catastrophic. OK, a quick point around terminology and a question.
If you work in the field of Operational Risk or similar for some time the word "catastrophic" is more about impact than cause.
Although the work catastrophic brings to mind God like acts such as meteors, tsunamis and war - in technology you are more likely in the realm of information security breaches or failure of process than much else.
However, CCP isn't using the word "catastrophic" to mean two totally random events taking out their primary and backup data centres at the same time. They are talking mainly about the following:
- Financial risk - Reputational risk - often leading to the former
In essence a "something catastrophic" is something that puts at risk their ability to make as much money as possible. Not a Biblical tempest taking out Shanghai.
CCP need to start being honest about their use of the word "catastrophic". I can tell you, it's not what they make it sound. If this was just a beta - meh I would not care. The problem is that they are taking people's money with this statement, and that I find concerning.
The other thing. The question I asked about. CCP simply refuse to answer this.
When the game finally, maybe limps over the line to a "Gold" game what will the entry level be for a new rolled character? Will it be the same as now or higher SP to reduce the current gap? You could expect a many more months of beta. I think it would be a poor thing of CCP to do to sell items to take customers to a point they would soon get to by default when the game is released.
I think it is a much more important point than questions around the reset SP (Which CCP don't want to). Even if they are de-allocated and you get them all back to apply where you see fit how happy would you be if everyone was now only a month's train behind you.
CCP, you are still dabbling in weasel words. You just can't seem to help yourselves these days. |

Oh great, a pointless self-righteous rant post about 1 word.
"I can tell you, it's not what they make it sound", oh great, you're an expert on knowing exactly what CCP means now?
A reset is not planned, if everything goes as it should (or relatively close to how it should), then there won't be a reset. Now about the "taking people's money", with every reset they always refunded AUR, so you won't lose any money. That is what CCP did for every reset.
When matchmaking is working properly, players will be matched for battles based on skill, so new players won't have to fight experienced vets. Your concern doesn't really make sense anyway since no one has to wait until launch to play since the game is in OPEN beta; if they're behind, its their own damn fault. |

CCP is not obligated to do anything.
Period.
If something comes along and invalidates your spending of skill points they will review on a case by case basis that is the least disruptive and destructive. This usually means not doing a damn thing, if you're lucky refund on those specific skills, if you are even more lucky a gift of skill levels or skill points. None the less always expect 0 skill points. |

I think you are looking a bit too much into the wording to really see that the answer from CCP Eterne is clear enough.
Locking this one down as I don't see it going anywhere. |

They may refund our skill points in full or part though if needed, or infact gift us more. This has happend in other games where the skill tree was adjusted.
Lets use the Drop Ship Tree as an example. Lets say I spend 500 000 SP to get to level 3 in one of the race specific dropships, say the Prometheus in the current level 3 gallente tree. (i'm making numbers up here for clarity) Then to balance the trees the ship that is currently level 3 that I am specced into is raised to level 4 and a new ship placed at level 3.
Getting the Promethus at level 4 in the new tree now costs 700 000 SP. So a new player needs 700 000 sp to use the promethus. But I had access to it at level 3 for 500k in the old tree. This means I have an advantage if no adjustments are made. I got to a higher level ship at a much cheaper SP spend.
They have Three options :
1) If they let me have the same access I had before so I can use the prometheus which is now level 4 I would need to be gifted the change in SP so my SP so I would be at level 4. i.e raising my SP from 500k to 700k. Otherwise I would have spent 500k but only have earned 700k.
2) they reset all skill points spent in that branch so I can re-spend and the level i am at and the SP spent balance to the new tree.
3) Give me access to the new level 3 ship. If its cost is 500k then no change is needed but if its cost was adjusted they would need to still do point 1 or 2.
I can see them refunding SP in full or part if they make large changes to the skill tree OR they add high cost new trees and want people to spec into them quickly for Beta testing purposes.
There is also a point of fairness. If we get race bonuses later then people who are now Gallente who specced into the Gallente dropship tree have and advantage. There were only two options. Gallente and Caldari. Those who chose those races have an advantage over those that did not. This is not a requirement outside of letting those beta testing have fair treatment. |
