I have several requests and concerns regarding the visual effects of Dust 514 that I would like to present to you.
I'll start off with a very functional and practical request. Like someone else pointed out in another thread, its kind of hard to tell a regular nanohive and a repair nanohive apart. It would help if the glowing orbs were color coded to reflect their capabilities.
I noticed in earlier builds the assault rifle muzzle flash (plasma effect) had a lighting effect; the side of the gun was illuminated by the muzzle flash (you can see it in this vid). Please bring back that effect, it was cool. This goes for all weapon muzzle flashes, they should all have some kind of illumination lighting effects since muzzle flashes are bright. It would really enhance the feeling that we are using high tech super weapons that regular unarmored humans can't handle.
Now, about the locus grenades. I understand most FPS frag grenades are just simple regular explosions, but Dust doesn't have to be like those games. I would really add some scifi flare to the game if locus grenade explosions were more... cool. It could involve a swirl or shockwave of wispy plasma or electricity, or whatever else you think would look good. Considering how advanced our tech is, it would make sense that our version of frag grenades may work and look a bit different.here. Here is an example (click here), something like this and then a shockwave expanding out from it would look nice as an explosion. This could apply to deployable explosives (remote, proxy), and AV grenades as well, though Ideally all their explosions should look different.
About hacking, it would be nice if there was a non-static hologram that projected from the console that displayed the progress of the hack. It can also show some cool graphics and bits of code passing through it. It can be a sphere, an series of hexagon screens, or whatever else. If we have to stand in one place staring at something for many seconds for a hack to complete, at least make it look pretty. While on the subject of hacking, the arm screen needs to show graphics relating to the action that's being performed. This should include buttons as well, right now when we hack, call a strike, or detonate a remote explosive, it looks like we're just tapping on the same static image with no buttons or icons on it.
About nova knives, nova knives have burning plasma edges, but they don't look like that at all. When slashing, the nova knives should have a burning glow effect similar to the concept art to make them really feel like dangerous plasma edged blades.
About dropsuit shields (or other shielded objects), it would be nice if there was some visual way to tell that shields are up besides the health bar. A visual effect (like a transparent but shiny grid of hexagons) coating the dropsuit would be a nice way of visualizing the shields of other players. It should be turned off in the merc quarters and the war barge, but active when on the battlefield. It isn't really needed, but would be nice for immersion. |

Hi, thank you for your valuable comments on the VFX dev blog.
With regards to the nanohive, we currently do not differentiate effects for the different variants. This is something that we can take a look at in future iterations.
WeGÇÖve optimized the lighting effect on the assault rifle, however, due to an existing bug the illumination was limited. There is a code fix for this soon.
Your examples of plasma explosions were great! We will make grenade explosions more diverse in future expansions.
We have a new hacking effect that will be in the next update and it is very close to what you have described.
We really like the concept for the nova knife youGÇÖve shown and we will continue to polish the VFX for it in future updates.
WeGÇÖve already gone through several iterations on the shield up and shield down effects and we are still working on a solution to this, so expect something new on this one soon.

When i hack an objective, i never stay still. Im always moving around(within hacking range) and switching between crouching and standing. A still target is an easy target. |

Now if the Nova Knives were -actually- dangerous, plasma edged blades that concept art would be remarkable.
Buuuut until we have to stop exploiting the 'melee/sprint/charge' glitch in order to effectively get them to charge while sprinting, they're not that great.
And, yanno, a movement speed boost from the Kinetic Catalyzers wouldn't hurt either. |
