Ok, stick with me here. We have a handful of projectile weapons... all of which seem to be Minmatar atm for some odd reason except for maybe the missile turrets (not sure on the origin of those, I don't know Eve very well). Anyway, unlike other weapons that have a reason for their ammunition eventually disappearing into thin air, a projectile is a solid object which won't just lose it's structural integrity by flying through the air.
I know what this means, and as much as I hate it, here's the weapons that need to be fixed to make this a reality:
HMG's. And I hate this idea more than any other, but it is a projectile weapon. That of course means to maintain balance they will need to be reworked... good luck with that. I'd make suggestions, but since there is so much QQ over this weapon already I'll keep them to myself.
SMG's. With the crappy aim they currently have, all you'd need to do is increase the spread a little more and it should be ok.
Mass Drivers. I know you hate them, but they are projectiles. Unless you plan to give them a fuse and make the sharpshooter skill determine the fuse length, they need to be made unlimited range weapons.
Missile Turrets. This one isn't really an issue. Missiles have been nerfed hard enough that giving them back their unlimited range can't really make them OP. Maybe back when you could OHK a heavy with one missile they could do with a range nerf, but now that they are basically rocket propelled plush toys, unlimited range isn't that big of a deal. As for drop, it should still have some drop to it since it is a rocket with only forward thrust.
For all of the non-explosive projectile weapons, you can drop off the damage considerably at longer ranges, but the bullets still need to travel until they hit something, be it the ground or the target.
I don't know if I missed any, but feel free to let me know if I did. |

EDIT: And thank you all for the Eve lore feedback which filled in the gaps in my knowledge about racial weapons. |

I don't know if I missed any, but feel free to let me know if I did. You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means. You people keep posting things like this in these forum threads, I don't think you are as smart as you think you are.
Merriam Webster's Definition:
Projectile: 1: a body projected by external force and continuing in motion by its own inertia; especially : a missile for a weapon (as a firearm)
2: a self-propelling weapon (as a rocket)
So really you are questioning what my definition of "body" is, so:
Body:
1a : the main part of a plant or animal body especially as distinguished from limbs and head : trunk b : the main, central, or principal part: as (1) : the nave of a church (2) : the bed or box of a vehicle on or in which the load is placed (3) : the enclosed or partly enclosed part of an automobile
2a : the organized physical substance of an animal or plant either living or dead: as (1) : the material part or nature of a human being (2) : a dead organism : corpse b : a human being : person
3a : a mass of matter distinct from other masses b : something that embodies or gives concrete reality to a thing c : a sensible object in physical space d : aggregate, quantity
My definition lies in of 3c, a sensible object in physical space. You can pick and choose which one YOU would use if you wish to play semantics, but this is what I am using the word as meaning, which by definition it can be. But feel free to play semantics if you wish, I'll just sit back with my popcorn and watch. |

Matticus Monk wrote:What is driving your concern, the lack of reality with respect to solid-matter bullets disppearing after a certain distance?
Given the speed on some of these projectiles if they become unlimited range weapons, with the only other force effecting them being gravity (for bullet-drop) you'll now have issues with them travelling way to far if you dont' take air friction into account - which would slow them also. Maybe this wouldn't be a big deal or could be ignored due to map size; but we are talking supersonic rounds here, some of which are not self propelled - that's not insignificant drag.
So, maybe the rounds woudn't now magically disappear after a certain range, but they would travel way to far if you are relying only on gravity to drop the bullets and take them out of play.
If the additional calculations needed to just do the bullet drop slow the game down, I'd say it's 'good enough' and we just deal w/ the lack of realism until a more viable solution comes along.
I don't have a driving concern, merely pointing out a flaw in the logic. Someone already supplied info that CCP said this is a bit much for them to be able to do without causing a bunch of latency issues, so I've let it go. Cheers. |
