          Prototype
Noun A first or preliminary model of something, esp. a machine, from which other forms are developed or copied.
As in, Prototype gear is basically just the beginning, paving the way for the actual suits and weapons once the technology has been harnessed and improved. So, for people like me who get pissed off about how simple it is to get into prototype gear right now, remember that this is only the beginning ^_^
Just trying to inject a little hope, as I've been feeling rather pessimistic and burnt out with the Beta this past month (11 months now) |

No, the prototype gear is just gear that is fictionally custom-designed and is sort of an 'experiment' - this doesn't translate to more suit tiers. I would be surprised if there were any more tiers inserted, especially considering we still haven't heard about any other racial suits (excluding the in-game ones). |

Things in eve are relative though. If something got nerfed its not that the weapon suddenly got weaker its that everyone's defenses got that much better.
This is a continuous non-stop arms race. Prototype will always will be on the cusp of the next iterations and as they get downgraded or fully produced the modules needed by them can no longer fit in the same number of slots, or has to get bigger to accommodation for new defense doctrines or the slots have to be hard-lined off into the suit itself to get some of the defenses on par again with current tech.
Thus yesterdays prototype stuff is today's militia gear. |

Well you do have tech 2 and 3 in eve although I'm not sure if that is just the adv and proto equivalent. |

"Tech 2" is a technology standardization made possible with morphite. A material that adapts properties of things that its adhered to. While tech 2 breakthoughs constantly lead to improvements in tech 1 technology the tech 2 advantage is more of the same function in less space.
"Tech 3" is a technology standardization made possible with fullerides. These materials are rule breaking inhabiting properties that are normally not found in similar materials allowing more objects than before to have dual functionality, such as using the ship's own shield system to launch missiles. Or the heat venting system doubling up as the capacitor drawing power from the shunted heat from the reactor mass. Tech 1 also has benefited from tech 3 discoveries. Your drop up-link is one direct result. As our immortalization implants are.
As for Advanced and Prototype gear in eve we do have it.
Meta 3 and Meta 4s are regarded as such.
Meta 4 performance is so good it actually can match the current tech 2 performance and has lesser skill requirements but because of its rarity and lack of production they're almost 10x more expensive than the eventually more powerful tech 2 variant which can draw on the pilot's additional training where the tech 1 module would have maxed out. |

Nothing keeps people playing like bigger and better equipment. It'll happen eventually as it is a terrible business decision to not have things like this in future expansions. |

Prototype gear could be thought of as the early prototypes from which officer gear is made from. |
