Drone bay modules in some new aircraft. Good / bad ?
There is going to be PVE drone warfare and those will have their AI. Would this weapon be balancable? |

Being a Gallente player in both EvE and Dust I fully support this >.> |

Interwebs told me it was a word. I meant could the AI be tweeked to make the weapon balanced in game seeing as how it would probably not require the user to aim it. |

I don't see why not. Every game aspect can be balanced with sp/isk requirements. |

I think this is a totally good idea and I totally agree.
Then I thought about it a bit, and came to the conclusion, that npc drones shouldn't be able to kill. I think that ewar or sensor drones are the way forward |

Halo 4 has a good concept going with the Auto Sentry in which you deploy a small drone that's no bigger than your head and starts firing a single burst of energy every second. The damage is only enough to annoy the enemy or at least keep them distracted but does some damage at least. However, Halo has it setup so that it's a limited time only sentry and can be shot at.
In the case of DUST, the drone shouldn't have a limited time to stay deployed but is only stationary and can be shot at. More advanced drones could perhaps be made to lock onto vehicles only and put out high damage but can only target vehicles. |

I support this too. I hope there's a way to implement drones! As a Gallentean pilot in EVE, I miss my drones when I'm "on the ground".
If swarms of drones would be too much, maybe we could control one remotely. Think of it like the predator drone in MOH or COD. It would be awesome to see two drone ships fighting it out with swarms of small fighters...but is that even possible? Imagine the lag....
Or maybe we could get in one and fly it?? That would also serve as the fighter jet role. I'd like to fly around a Warrior II pls....
just ideas. :)

Not a problem of being out of place. But can the PS3 sustain AI drones flying all around ? And then regarding balance, they would always end up being either OP or useless.
So, yeah would be cool. But probably not doable. |

This thread gives me an idea. It's possible I saw something similar somewhere along the way, because the idea feels vaguely familiar. I may be connecting it with something from EVE, or from somewhere else, or I might just be imagining it. I don't know. Anyway, here goes:
Drone control system.
Active Module.
Requires at least one Small Turret on the vehicle to be replaced with Drone Bays (which fills the player seating position as well as the turret location). Once the module is activated, it must then also be designated a target. The targeting process works similarly to Swarm Launcher lock-on, with the fire button held while the target is kept within a fixed lock-on area, except that line of sight isn't required (as long as someone on your team keeps the target lit up for the duration of the lock process), and the designated target can be infantry. Also, instead of a fixed lock speed based entirely on the lock speed of the weapon and the firing player's skills, the lock time will also account for on the target's scan profile and the distance of the target being marked.
When activated, the drones will head out to the target, attack, and return to the vehicle after a fixed duration. Drones have a fuel limit before they drop, and will aim to use 1/3 of their fuel hunting the target before attempting to return (to ensure that they make it back to the vehicle). If you launch them from far enough away from a target, they may not reach the designated enemy before returning, and if you retreat far enough from the target before they start to head back your way, it's possible to make the drones run out of fuel and die. Additionally, the cooldown on drone activation only starts after they return (refueling time), and there's a drone count for each drone bay the vehicle is fitted with, and when Drones are destroyed, that number goes down, reducing the effectiveness of the system.
Drones will attack a designated enemy or defend a designated teammate until the marked target is killed/destroyed, the drone is destroyed, or its fuel reserve reaches 1/3. If and when the drones return to the vehicle, the cooldown starts counting down, based on the lowest fuel rating of any returned drone. |
